In Part 1 , I left you with a puzzle: given the chip markings what can you tell about the BB8's internals? I've done very little reverse engineering before so this was quite a challenging. There are a few SMD databas...

RE: Disassembling BB8 (Part2)

I have a BB-8 and the batteries were dead. Opened it up and replaced them. The motors are now working and it moves and lights up when charging, as expected. However, no bluetooth connection is available, even after reseting.

I can see that the CSR1010 tries to communicate with the external eprom (chip U5), but the code might be corrupted. Has anyone made a dump of the U5 chip - STM24512 that can share?

RE: Disassembling BB8 (Part2)

Nice job of circuit sleuthing.

It has been a while since I did anything like this, but one thing is obvious, the job is much more difficult with SMT and highly integrated circuits.

Very interesting, I look forward to the next post.

DAB

RE: Disassembling BB8 (Part2)

>What are the two processors saying to each other?

"Does it feel drafty to you?"

"Hey dude, we just got disassembled!"
