I haven't tested a great a many guitars and obviously the maximum output depends on the pickups used but a typical mid range instrument can manage >3V pk with hard playing. This was the figure I used for maximum input without overload for a professional electronic device - tricky with a single AA battery !!

This is really valuable analysis for those looking to replicate or modify that effect!

A mini history about Baxendall would be interesting, his wikipedia entry is too short : (

I don't know anything about him, but I know he did some cool stuff, such as some interesting work on oscillators. I tried to replicate

one of his circuit topology a while back out of curiosity, this was the circuit I ended up with:

(for the transformer, I used the thinnest wire I could find, 100 turns, and 18 turns feedback).

It made a quite pleasing tone.. And worked from anything from a 1.5V battery to 9V.
