Further down the line you could perhaps look at triggering the timer using a web API which contains real world launch event data.

There are some sites out there that contain launch information but I'm not sure if there are any with web API's, so they may have to be scraped for the data:

You probably would have to rethink the countdown slightly, as it would probably be more like days to launch as opposed to an actual synchronised launch countdown. However you could perhaps still do something for the scheduled launch window. "Thunderbirds are go..."
