Yes there are many promises left unfulfilled by AI. There is a very interesting story behind the various ideals and claims for AI.

Fuzzy logic became a very useful variation as long as you maintained context with your application.

Rule based reasoning can be used for some applications, but again, you need a limited input environment to maintain control.

Before I retired I was coauthor of a patent application for an adaptive signal processing algorithm that could learn to pull faint coherent signals from very noisy data.

The key to the algorithm's success was the ability to define the background noise and use a runtime predictive algorithm that learned to find the signal because it was not part of the background.

So I watch the AI developments with interest, but so far most have failed to produce much useful capability.
