Hi Frank,

Here's a possible idea for when they are older, Radio Camp : )

I've not tested this yet, I'm hoping my nephews can try it with lots of supervision. I'm still considering it (I might rethink and do a simpler project first, so far the older one has done a breadboard project).

I purchased two radio kits, to see which one may be easier:

This radio kit has an IC, so I may need to solder that : ( On the plus side, the performance may be good, and it is both AM and FM.

This discrete radio kit may be easier, although it is AM only.

I think what DAB says: they will always look back on cool Grandad. I bet one year they turn up with a robot they made themselves. If your grandson is getting on with Scratch, could he be ready for Mindstorms! Stories like this are brilliant, especially brilliant when I’m about to turn the light out.

Frank,

What a great way to spend time with your grandchildren! This is a special gift that you give them that will last a lifetime. I still remember hanging out with my Grandfather in his amazing shop. He helped me build things ans inspired my love of tools and building.

Are you planning any future sessions? Can we sign up?

Frank, that is a wonderful story !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think science and engineering is a bit like Jesuits - get them young enough and you have for life (paraphrased!)

Sadly, my grandchildren are too old now - 16 and 18 - to be interested: they've just had junior and senior prom!.
