The robot kit looks like a lot of fun. I have a different one that is waiting for me to find the time to build it.

I've never tried a VL53L5. I've used the VL53L0/1 ones. I like the "snappable" breakout design that allows just using the sensor in a smaller footprint. It is interesting that it comes in a 2-pack.

Let's hope that net Christmas won't come so late...

A very nice surprise package. The TOF sensor looks pretty cool. I can see updating some of my robotics projects to try this sensor out. Nice robot platform, I look forward to seeing how you finish this project.

Power regulator is Torex XC6222D331MR-G according to schematics and BOM avalaible at CAD Resources tab on https://www.st.com/content/st_com/en/products/evaluation-tools/product-evaluation-tools/imaging-evaluation-boards/vl53l5cx-satel.html#cad-resources. This is interesting. In case of MCU eval boards, ST always used their own LDOs. It look that ST's own LDOs are completly out of stock now or I cannot imagine other reason for using 3rd party one.

I recently bought a VL53L5CX because ST was offering free shipping and the IC looked particularly interesting. I didn't notice they had breakouts so I just bought the IC, but sadly I've been too busy to build a PCB to test it. I suspect that with the addition of other sensors it may end up being a very useful for mapping, localization or slam.
