I have completed this project, but not posted details yet for a good reason. I will update my blog and then come back here and update this blog.

I ended up using a USB camera instead of the Pi Cam. Slower and lower resolution of course but cheaper and certainly not so fragil!

It turned out well, and is disguised very well, stay tuned!

Theres nothing original about this project, pretty easy actually. Ben heck did something similar recently. There are free apps that will make a cell phone do the same types of things.

I just chose to use a raspberry pi since I have on hand and doing it this way gives me the most control over the functionality. The free phone apps I tried leave the videos on the phone so if a lot is going on it could run out of space. My script will delete old videos but also ensure that if space is running out I get notified.

I found with the proper settings a 1 minute video is about 5mb so a 32gb card should provide enough buffer.

Its also cool the motion software will allow real time viewing via a web browser.

Im placing on order to Amazon shortly to get a bunch of gifts, so the parts I need are coming from Raspberry Pi via Amazon.

This will be an interesting build.

There was a similar one done a few years ago "Catch Santa Challenge" http://www.element14.com/community/roadTests/1220

Pi Cam without the IR filter. ....... but it is able to see in the dark even without an IR source.

You might find that it is better, but the sensitivity isn't enhanced, so having an IR light source will help.
