Hey John I need to get a good soldering iron. With RS going out of business, I fear it may be harder to get tips for the standard one I have. I did get one of their little ones but it burns itself up.

So I have been using the $5 wal-mart ones, and when the tip is gone I go buy another. If I leave it on too long, it oxidizes itself to hell. They also do not seem to sell replacement tips for it.

Suggestions?

A very nice mod, have you gone as far as calibrating the external temperature reading with internal temperature or with efficacy of soldering

John this is a great mod to MY soldering iron! I should took this as I have one almost similar (it is just light blue instead of black) with exactly the same problems.
