Nice write-up John! I've heard a lot of differing opinions on the use of a variac to power up a board that's been out of use for a while. In your case, why did you choose to use a variac? I've not personally used a variac, however I have several old radios that I intend to restore at some point. So, I may need to invest in one.

Great post John.

A little water can be very bad for electronics.

I remember we also had problems with some PC coatings that allowed the copper to short out between traces.

I am curious, did the cleaner include ultra sonic or just high temperature sterilization?

Brilliant writeup John.

It does show how experience, knowledge and careful observation can determine the likely causes, and make a repair.

I struggled with convincing some co-workers the importance of taking certain things out of service prior to failure, just to clean off the dust and accumulated dirt.

Once I showed what happened when it got wet, and the damage it caused, they were much happier swapping them out earlier thus saving the company money, and also the customers happier.

Keep up the blogs it is something that new Engineers need to learn in order to become good Engineers.
