Great find John.

Glad you cleaned up that vintage marvel.

I have used similar military qualified devices and they were very reliable and robust.

I suspect that the older gear will still perform while the new meter will be hard pressed to survive fifty years of use.

Very nice write up along with an interesting story. I use to work as a military electronics engineer. I often wonder if some of the equipment that I developed ever end up in surplus electronics stores.

I'd not heard of Stanley Transformer, looks like William Stanley was influential in productizing the transformer, and E-core transformers are an evolution of his designs:

Awesome find John, that Anton meter looks really great, you've done a fantastic job cleaning it up and getting it back in use! If you haven't already done so I would recommend you put some O-ring grease on the seals and then they'll probably last another 60 years!

Take the DC and AC voltage ratings and the CAT rating of the Mustool with a very large pinch of salt though John. I wouldn't recommend you use it for high voltage stuff. Look at the teardowns and reviews Dave Jones has done in the past on cheap multimeters similar to this and you'll see the required clearances and protection components are likely not there.

Great blog, that old Anton meter is a great looking unit, deserves a prominent space on the shelf to keep an eye on all these newbie digital things kicking around.

It is certainly a vast difference between quality made old gear and the newer cheaper equipment.
