Hi John,

This is great to see! I'd read about these things, but never seen one in action until I saw your video. It's awesome that such pieces of technology can still be observed through your efforts to repair and document it here.

Also, I do remember making electric-shock greeting cards : ) with a relay and small audio transformer in similar configuration, until it got confiscated by the school teacher : (

John,

I too had a 1957 chevy (station wagon). It was a great old car and I really learned a lot about mechanic work in owning that car. I changed the automatic transmission over for a 4-speed manual, and ending up rebuilding about half of the car in the process. I did more work than driving (mostly because I was not old enough to get my license). I enjoyed turning on the old radio, waiting for the music, that I would listen to while I worked on the car. There was a bit of a buzz in the music, but it did sound good.

I ended up trading the car for a nice motorcycle, which I got just in time to get my license. Good times.

I was always fascinated by the old radios. I remember learning about the vibrator module and how it was used to generate the higher voltages that were necessary to run the tubes. Those were the good old days.

Thanks for sharing the trip into the past.

Very cool - great story and repair... I am old enough to remember those radios but never knew how they worked. I cannot remember for sure if the radio in my '60 falcon was a tube radio but when it quit working my brother and I replaced it with something that almost fit from a car at the junk yard. We later added a very up to date 8 track tape deck :-).
