Very interesting John! I have never really put to much mental energy into how these weapons of fear and pain actually worked. Kind of cool.

I've always thought these things were piezoelectric. Very interesting. Is there anything else you can do with this other than clean teeth?

I'm not sure what the inductance is or if the flyback spike is useful, but if it gets near the FET breakdown voltage you could always use a snubber diode across the inductor.
