This was a good read on a Sunday morning. It is a shame that vested interests get in the way, and you’re probably right about the liabilities. This could easily have been incorporated into the equipment itself and tied to a paid-for maintenance plan so that there is always on-going cash flow for the manufacturer: their biggest risk in not doing anything, is that the clinic perceives the equipment as unreliable if it just fails.

Nice post! It's great seeing the evolution of the design too, from the original to the final Squealer III. Great work from you and [mention:8fb233e8974445138ef0af2b63b49f94:e9ed411860ed4f2ba0265705b8793d05] it looks like a very well designed piece of equipment.

The tech you've identified (Smartedge Agile) and other systems like Azure Sphere are the newer or different ways of doing it as you say. And with AI techniques, machine sounds can be recognised. These types of systems are more general-purpose (the software can be adapted for any sound, they can get proactive maintenance etc) but as you've found, sometimes it's not the actual technology, just that some industries are slower to adopt, or there is lock-in, barriers to entry, etc. I tried to help a friend with some optician's software system, but found some are behind the times and others are very tech-averse : (

I saw a cool video of sensor and radio tech (I think - I'm guessing how it works from the video) recently, in a very unexpected industry!

Nice blog John! It is always nice to write about an adventure that worked out well, but I (like yourself) have more stories of great ideas that never fully took off at the time, only to turn out successful for someone else. I for one, do still enjoy knowing that I saw the potential and gave it a solid try. Rejoice in your understanding of the problem and your best attempts ate coming to market with a product that addresses that problem.
