For future projects: The bootloader that&amp;#39;s responsible for loading the program into flash lives at the end of memory, so you can use a real compiler (&lt;em&gt;avr-gcc&lt;/em&gt; with &lt;em&gt;avr-libc&lt;/em&gt;) or assembler (&lt;a class="jive-link-external-small" href="https://github.com/Ro5bert/avra" rel="nofollow ugc noopener" target="_blank"&gt;AVRA&lt;/a&gt;) with those boards too. &lt;em&gt;avrdude&lt;/em&gt; has an arduino programmer type that&amp;#39;s used for programming the boards by the Arduino IDE.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you add yourself to the &lt;em&gt;dialout&lt;/em&gt; group you should be able to run the Arduino IDE as a normal user.
