Jan Cumps Ok there were other reasons to use Ethernet vs USB, First USB has length limitations of about 3m. Second to go over that limitation you need some sort of extender, the most common is USB-Ethernet and at the other end, you use an Ethernet-USB converter, which costs about somewhere between 20 to 80 bucks. I just use an Ethernet shield for the Arduino Mega which costs about 12 bucks on eBay.

More point I use terminated CAT-5 patch cord for my CANAerospace cabling. So I only need to buy two items 1. MCP2515 CAN Bus Module with a TJA1050 transceiver 2. Dual RJ45 Ethernet Connector Breakout Board, off of eBay for less than a ten spot.

Point to ponder I don't believe that USB ever used the ISO network model. And I wouldn't even think about trying to pass CAN over it.
