I found the PIC18F26k80 paired with a MCP2551 (now NRND) was a great way to get familiar with CAN bus, Microchip have lots of documentation such as their ECAN application note (as the 26k80 has an onboard ECAN module) and C library's, very easy to implement once you have got an idea of the CAN bus concepts.

If you want to reduce space: the new range of Arduino MKR 1xxx are much smaller and there's a CAN shield available.

I've tested one in a CAN setup.
