I have definitely not had much chance of sitting still for very long yet. We are still renovating the uncle's place and I expect we'll be busy with that for a few more months.

But we were also able to catch up with some friends we haven't seen in a while, which is super nice.

My Dad retired early. He loves it. He is now 82 and has NO plans on stopping.

He's been on chemo for leukemia for almost a year and finally started registering some white blood cells last week. His response? "Good. How I can get back to travelling again."

When he says travelling, he means driving from Maine to Florida (about 1,500 miles each way).

He actually gripes about the "old people". To him, it's a frame of mind.

Nico,

Making the decision to retire early is a biggie! I had a spread sheet set up showing me how my pension was growing and when it reached a point where my wife and agreed we could manage comfortably (she is still working, past pension age, because she loves it so much!!), I went for it.

I have never regretted it!

My time is always fully occupied, doing what I want (mostly)!

I wish you all the very best for a long and happy retirement, especially with shopping cart(s)

Welcome to the club. I have only one regret about retirement - that I didn't retire earlier! I worked an extra six months after my earliest retirement date just in case my work pension wasn't enough, to get me to state pension age. It wasn't worth it.

Receding state pension age is an irritation. I can also remember proudly informing my wife on one birthday that I only had two more years to go until I could retire, only to be informed that I was a year younger than I thought I was and that I therefore had three more years to go - great sadness ensued at that point.

It's the Echternach procession for me. While I was counting down one year at the time, the government added two years to the retirement age.

You’ll wonder why you never did it earlier! I took voluntary redundancy just over 3 years ago and decided not to go back to work. Never looked back and certainly don’t miss working. Congratulations.

Congratulations - let us know how the transition goes - I'm sure you won't have a problem finding things to do, but how does the motivation change?

Hi Nico,

Glad you will have time to enjoy life a little. Retirement took a while for me to adjust to but I am very happy with it now. Sounds like you have a plan in place and that will help with the transition.
