I should have paid the $40 plus shipping and let somebody with more patience than I do it. If the battery is glued to the screen, let someone else do it. If it is not... go for it.

I had an iphone that bulged like that for a year before the battery was successfully replaced by one of my associates. If you can find a battery, obviously replacing it as soon as possible minimizes risk of catastrophic damage. My Kobo is not bulging, but the battery is not holding a charge for long. I will replace it at some point. There are good Youtube videos on how to replace a Kobo battery and the iphone battery, so you may find a video for your device.

Do not keep it inside the device for long. Get it changed as soon as possible it might expand further and crack the screen or explode. Better to replace it at the earliest

I had this happen to a MacBook Pro I owned (not the case separation). Once it got in this state I wondered whether it would further deteriorate under use or only under charging - I.e. how safe it was once that process started. Notwithstanding, I got it changed: a user consumable part that to change requires Apple to have it for 7 days and change the bottom case, keyboard and trackpad as well because of how it is constructed I’ve become really disenchanted with manufacturers who don’t allow an easy battery swap but it seems that it is very common these days. What a (load of e-) waste.
