Spotted a couple of bumbles this afternoon entering an air brick on the side of the house.

Not sure if they are planning on using the airbrick as a bee hotel or if their plans extend further on into the basement.

Must be a higher class of bee, as in previous years, bees have made do with the compost bins.

I inherited allergy to bee stings from my mother. And my father (and grandfather) were beekeepers. My father hardly reacts to a sting, and if he does get stung the adrenaline rush helps his arthritis! I puff up like a balloon from a sting. I learned to stay calm when helping my father at the hives. And yes, don’t go barefoot in our yard.

Yes, there is a lot to learn about bees and how we can keep them healthy.

As an avid Mead drinker, I appreciate the honey production and use.

The basic hives and frames don’t appear to have changed from 60 years ago when I was a boy. Numbers 7 and 21 are kind of interesting as they are half sized. My father kept 5 or 6 hives over the years and since my brothers were allergic to the stings I was his helper. His first hive came from a swarm I found in a tree while playing in the woods behind our house. He also was a cabinet maker and would occasionally make hives and frames in his shop.

Bee keeping is so interesting. We have a large garden that could benefit with full-time pollinators, so this is something that my wife and I have thought about for some time. We do have a friend (local park's Nature Preserve Officer and Beekeeper) who might be able to help us get started, but I just have to get past those childhood memories of being stung.
