Enabling Notifications when people comment or click 'Like'

Happy New Year! My first feature suggestion of 2024 : ) It's similar to suggestions in 2023 and 2022, but it's still worth bringing up again perhaps.

I was wondering, could there be some brainstorming between users and element14 to improve notifications-enabling, solely in ways that are not dependent on Verint? Because if it's dependent on Verint then it's unlikely to happen in a good timeframe.

If a user either comments or likes a discussion (or likes the comments), or likes a blog post or review, or likes any of the comments for them, then the suggestion is to either

(1) to automatically subscribe the user for for both discussion/blog/review notifications _and_ comment notifications (provided that's what the user wants in their profile) or

(2) to show a pop-up to allow the user to subscribe when they actively click 'Like', or

(3) replace "Like" with two buttons: "Like and Subscribe" and "Like Only", and replace the 'Reply" button during commenting, with "Reply and Subscribe" and "Reply Only".

Other ideas appreciated (since it's clear some brainstorming is needed, to find a non-Verint-dependent path).

This would not replace the need for "Latest Activity" by the way. If there was a "Latest Activity" that worked as well as Jive did, then notifications-enabling probably would not need to be improved.

    The functionality of this is 'core' to the platform and altering that is dependent on Verint, the widgets around its functionality and interacting with the back-end of it.

    This is similar to functionality that we currently have in place for forums and content you create, for example:

    - We have changed group permissions so that you can participate in a group without being a member of that group.

    - Verint relies on you being a group member to receive the majority of notifications or subscriptions for that group's content. So we set an automation that automatically joins you to a group when you participate in it.

    - Verint has an out-of-the-box extension that automatically subscribes you to notifications of the forum applications for that group when you become a member of a group.

    It's now been over a year when I raised this with Verint and asked them to provide more functionality on this, and three months ago they replied with:

    Overall there needs to be a better introduction to subscriptions, and notifications and enabling and disabling them. The experience for visibility on these when you're using mobile and desktop, are both not great, and I believe they're confusing. 

    The development team have introduced automation which should subscribe you to notifications of comments on your content automatically, regardless of what the content is.

    Part of Verint's approach to this solution is to have "daily digests", but I have been hesitant to enable that functionality. A strongly expressed reason at the moment why members join and then ask for their accounts to be deleted is: "I receive too many e-mails from the site" or "I receive too many notifications from the site", and that's also why I'm hesitant to push for automatic enrollment and subscription to notifications, it's simply more 'spam'. There needs to be a balance between customisation and notification, and for that I need the dev' team to work with me on providing a solution, and as you say, provide one that can be a band-aid before anything is implemented (if ever) by Verint.

    There are, sadly, a couple of bugs with the activity widget. I believe these are being addressed in the 12.1.5 update we're moving to later this month or next month. There's also an API limitation behind the scenes on being able to have all content updated in a widget with 'what's the latest activity' - comments and actions on content are treated entirely separately, and it would take no small amount of work to try to combine these. 

    I have directly asked about this on the Verint Community, somewhat recently and it still needs further specifying and discussion with the development team as Verint's suggestion is basically "create your own widget and do it yourself" with the Activity Story API. This gives us freedom if we're able to do that, and it needs to be resourced with our developers to see if they can warm up to the idea and spec' out how it behaves.

    Feels like this may be part way there, and also a set back from what we want.
