If you are interested in the subject this is one of the first books before the "marketing buzz" about IofT started going crazy: Interconnecting Smart Objects with IP: The Next Internet , you will…

Hi All - I recently learned about "Internet of Things".  It's a really an interesting and exciting concept!  Since it's almost been a year since this post - thought I'd see if you all have since read the book, what you thought of it and if any of you are working on projects that you'd be willing to share with the Community?

    Hi Nicole,

I got the book for Xmas, I've had a quick read through but not been able to properly read it yet From what I've seen it will be a good read (Hopefully soon)

At the moment, I'm working on a 'signs of life' indicator, mean to be for someone who is elderly and living along so someone can just make sure everything is Ok remotely. (I know it sounds morbid, but it is based on a real life situation)

It monitors heat, light and will shortly monitor distance (as in 'is someone in the chair or not?') and send the data to Cosm to be monitored there, along with triggers for temp too low, high and the same for light conditions.

    Steve

If you are interested in the subject this is one of the first books before the "marketing buzz" about IofT started going crazy: Interconnecting Smart Objects with IP: The Next Internet , you will also find plenty of resources on-line about this, very interesting papers and presentations.

And one of Vint Cerf presentations is a must watch, here is one you can jump to minute 14.

    Cheers

Hey Steve, thanks for sharing - sounds like a really interesting and useful product - peace of mind for caretakers and family.   It reminds me of a project a few colleagues of mine have been working on building here on the Community - BIME.  The BIME project team is working to create a sensor for persons with dementia that alerts loved ones/caretakers if the person has gotten up from bed.  I think they might be looking for people to join the team with them if you're interested?

Thanks for sharing that video, Jorge - lots to think about - IoT touches so many areas!  Very exciting times!

My pleasure Nicole, it is a fascinating subject and if you are able to isolate some of the marketing hype that is building up around it, there is a lot to learn and a lot to do about it. I've been doing R&D on the subject for at least the past 6 years, following some of the developments at IETF, particularly 6LoWPAN (IPv6 on Low Power Area Networks,) so if you need any help feel free to contact me.

I got somehow now involved on planning the first Makers Meetup in San Antonio, Texas, where one of the subjects will be the Internet of Things and we'll be working with several educational programs going on at Geekdom, introducing younger generations to it, making stuff with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc.

I'll probably send you a message to see if element14/newark/farnell is interested/willing to be sort of sponsor providing swag/stuff to give as a prize for people bringing some donation item for charity.

BTW, given that the author is touching a very advanced subject related to the Internet, he should consider seriously to create an eBook version of it, I barely buy any technical printed books nowadays.

Here is a nice tutorial about how to send data to Cosm (formerly Pachube) from a Raspberry Pi.

    Cheers

    Jorge
