Most people start off projects by breadboarding components and wires but if you’re connecting a common component, such as an LCD display, you can connect a shield on top of an Arduino using pin connectors to easily join your components with an Arduino. Shields are just stuff that you put on top of the Arduino, that fit directly on the pins, and there are libraries for these shields, so they are very easy to use.
