Converter/adaptor for DC plugs?

gizmo1990
gizmo1990 over 5 years ago

Hi there. I've a spare 5v 2a power supply which I'd like to get some use from. However the DC connector is one of those slightly smaller tips. I believe its spec is Outer 3.5mm and Inner 1.4mm.

I've tried looking/ebaying for some sort of simple converter plug which would turn it into a standard 5.5mm 2.5mm tip, but I can't find any such item.

Does anyone know if such a converter/adaptor exists? And if so where to get one? I thought I'd check before snipping it off and soldering an actual 5.5mm 2.5mm tip!

Any advice much appreciated.

I've seen similar items on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/1-35mm-Converter-2-1mm-5-5mm-Extension/dp/B008A7565O/ref=psdc_172544_t1_B01L4F6ANU or https://www.amazon.com/3-5mm-Female-Socket-Barrel-Adapter/dp/B01L4F6ANU/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=3.5mm+to+5.5mm+adapter&qid=1588517562&s=electronics&sr=1-4 , so you might try more searching.  I've never tried one of these adapters and the one's I've come across are for 5.5mm 2.1mm tip.  You're probably better off just wiring the tip that you need.

Sorry, realized that the link associated with the picture is for a 3.5mm TS connector which is the wrong type.  The other one should be okay and you can get 5.5mm 2.1mm tip to 5.5mm 2.5mm tip adapters but probably not convenient to stack a couple of adapters, not to mention the added cost.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, really appreciate it. Those green tipped terminal ones look like they'll work but would require snipping one end of either cable. I was hoping for a simple two way female/female adaptor, no cutting required. Given that, I think I'll just go the wiring a new tip route. Probably a standard 5.5mm 2.5mm one.

While I'm on this subject. Does anyone know if there's any harm in repurposing a Raspberry Pi 5v power supply this way too? I have another device which I've lost the psu for, which requires 5v 2a and has a 5.5 2.5 dc connector and the official pi ones are known decent quality. Would there be any problem simply snipping off the USB-C connector and soldering on a DC jack?

I repurpose wall wart power supplies all the time. Now that doesn't mean much, who the H, E, double hockey sticks am I to be saying it is OK!

Raspberry Pi power cube have a specification. Provided you don't exceed the specification they work fine. Repurposing power supplies has been a complaint in the cell phone industry. It seems every cell phone manufacture comes out with a new power supply. Customers wind up with a drawer full of wall warts.

I have a drawer in my filling cabinet for wall warts. I might discard the unusable consumer electronics but never the power supply. Adaptors like what I have shown give me one more way to put the supplies to another use.

Thanks for the reply @sean conway . It should be well within spec. The device I want to power requires 5v at 2a and the Pi psu supplies 5.1 at 3a. So that should be within tolerance. I'm drawn to the pi psus because they're a known quality verses no name other supplies, which might have suspect specs and quality.

Confirm power requirements is DC voltage. I have a few motors kicking around that need AC voltage. If DC meets the need Pi power supplies are reusable.
