lab2 experiment 4 (JTAG part)

Hi all

For the lab2 experiment4 step 10
--> connect two micro-USB cables between the Window Host machine and the ZedBoard conectors J17 (JTAG) and J14(UART)

I have a question for this step

When I run "run configuration", Do I have to use two USB cables for USB-to-UART (J14) and USB-JTAG (J17)?

The given USB cable (USB to mini USB) was only one.

From the given instruction, it only says "connect two micro-cables between........."

So, If anyone knows about this step to finish "hello world" lab without any error, please teach me how to connect host computer with the board.

thanks

I just finished the training videos recently.  And, yes, you suppose to use two USB cables.  It's unfortunate that they only include one with the package.

I am fairly new to the FPGA world, so don't quote me on this, but I believe JTAG is what's being used for programming FPGA, so you might be able to only connect to JTAG when running configuration.  UART is used for serial communications with the computer.

User thchiou is correct. When you "run a configuration," the tools will download over JTAG. If you debug a configuration, that also happens over JTAG. The UART is simply providing you feedback from your application at the same time.

Also, just to clarify, the cable included in the kit is not USB to mini USB. It is a Male Standard-A to Male Micro-B, same cable as is used with most cell phones these days. We figured most people had extras of these lying around so chose not to include 2 rather than increase the cost of the kit another couple $$$. Sorry for the inconvenience if you didn't happen to have that 2nd one handy. You can get these anywhere that cell phone accessories are sold.

So while debugging my JTAG problem, I would like to confirm these are generic micro-USB to standard-USB cables (x2) for the labs, and that one came with the kit, and one is supplied by the user.

    Chuck,

ZedBoard uses generic micro-USB to standard-USB cables. One ships with the kit. You need two total for the labs to be able to simultaneously connect the USB-UART and the Digilent USB-JTAG.
