Pico Zed external JTAG connector ?

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

Having just exported my hardware design to SDK, I would like to establish a JTAG connection in order to test it using the debugger.

Page 20 of the PicoZed 7Z015 / 7Z030 SOM Hardware User Guide states "PicoZed 7015/7030 requires an external JTAG cable connector populated on the carrier card for JTAG operations."

It also displays Table 14 listing the JTAG Pin Connections.

Mr Google lead me to http://zedboard.org/accessories where it pointed me to an avnet link (below) to a JTAG HS3 Programming Cable for $59.

Avnet Link:
http://www.em.avnet.com/en-us/design/drc/Pages/Digilent-JTAG-HS3-Programming-Cable.aspx

Questions:
1) Is this my only recourse?
2) What pinout descriptions (Table14?) do I need If one were to be created here at my work?
3) What is the link to the datasheet for the Xilinx sensor to image carrier card?
4) What purpose does J16 on the carrier card serve? It is not described in the guide.

    1) You will need an active JTAG cable of some sort. The specification for implementing a cable that would work with the Xilinx tools is not published. The only options I know of are the HS3, the earlier version (HS2), or one of the Xilinx Platform Cable USB cables: http://www.xilinx.com/products/boards-and-kits/hw-usb-ii-g.html We use the HS3 cables here.

    2) These are the JTAG pinouts but, as mentioned above, the specifications to connect directly to the Xilinx tools are not published.

    3) I don't know what link you are referring to.

    4) As listed in Table 20 of the PicoZed Carrier Card V1 Users Guide J15/J16 are SMA MGT/CLK outputs.

For #3 I was referring to the board that the PicoZed plugs into. I neglected to mention earlier that this is for the PicoZed based Smart Vision Development Kit.

Do you know for a fact that the Xilinx Platform USB cable has been used on this card before?

The board has what looks like a JTAG connector "J2"
but the pins are not labeled. Hence I don't know what pins in the connector map to which jtag lines on the Xilinx Platform cable.

For the record my local Avnet rep says the HS3 cable is what must be used, given it has a "proprietary" chip that interfaces to the software and that a jtag cable with out it would not work. But if the Xilinx Cable option is available,
I need to know which lines from the cable plug into which pins in the jtag connector.

Based on the FAQs document on the Smart Vision Development Kit documents page it looks like you need to register with Sensor to to Image to get more information:

    http://zedboard.org/support/documentation/5576

I have not tried the Xilinx cable myself, but the JTAG connector is a standard pinout that will work with either the HS3 cable or the Xilinx Platform Cable. The Xilinx Platform Cable has the same circuitry as is in the proprietary chip in the HS3 cable. I do think the HS3 cable is less expensive to purchase if you don't already have one of the cables. But the Xilinx cable should work if you already have one.

I managed to get a Xilinx Platform cable.
So this is solved. Thank You.
