There is also the possibility that you have run into the problem specific to Vivado 2014.2 and Virtual Machines detailed in this Xilinx Answer Record:

If you are trying to use an 'Activation' based license you might want to request a 'Certificate' based license until the Virtual Machine issue is resolved in Vivado 2014.3.

I've changed to Windows7 and it seems to work ok.
When I'm back in my office (after October 15th), I'll try Sven's steps with Ubuntu etc. At the moment I need to get some work done and Windows7 works.

as promissed, a quick update from a newbie for newbies. I'm still working with Windows 7 and Vivado 2014.3.1 to learn the new tools. It seems more stable, tested, supported and when I make mistakes, I know it's me and not the tools.

The main problem with the Linux installation were the libraries. I installed Vivado 2014.3.1 on Ubuntu 14.04.1 (64bit) with some additional tweeks and it seems to work ok. My notes:

i1. Install Ubuntu 14.04.1 with all default values and reboot
i2. Run software updater and reboot
i3. Add virtual box guest additions and reboot (optional)
i4. sudo vi /etc/group Add user to dialout and vboxsf groups
i5. Unpack Xilinx*Lin_2014.3.1*gz in /tmp
i6. sudo apt-get install libc6:i386 gtkterm Add 32bit library and serial terminal
i7. sudo /tmp/Xilinx*/xsetup Run setup and install only "Hardware Server (Standalone)" with "Cable Drivers"
i8. /tmp/Xilinx*/xsetup Run setup, select software and install into ~/Xilinx

t1. Start Vivado for license and "Hallo World" test
[Help]->[Manage License] Optain/load license and exit license manager
t2. Create new project with MicroZed board
t3. Create block design, add IP, Zynq, run block automation and save (CTRL-S)
t4. Generate output and create wrapper (source tab, right mouse click)
t5. Generate bitstream
t6. [File]->[Export] Export hardware with bitstream
t7. [File]->[Launch SDK] Start SDK
t8. [File]->[New]->[Other] In SDK, start new Xilinx Application Project
t9. Connect JTAG and USB cables to MicroZed board with gtkterm set to 115200 baud
t10. [Right click C application]->[Run as] Launch application on hardware and check "Hallo World" output on gtkterm
t11. Close all windows

h1. Unpack UG871-design-files.zip into ~/Vivado_HLS_Tutorial
h2. Start Vivado HLS for FPGA test
h3. Create new project with hls_macc (in ~/V*/*IP_with_Zynq/lab1/hls*) for MicroZed
h4. Run C Simulation, C Synthesis and Export RTL
h5. Close Vivado HLS and start Vivado
h6. Create new project with MicroZed board
h7. [Project Settings]->[IP] Add the directory with the HLS project to IP repository
h8. Create block design, add IP, Zynq, hls_macc and run block automation
h9. Customize Zynq (right click on Zynq, add AXI master and PL-PS interrupts)
h10. Run connection automation, connect interrupt and save (CTRL-S)
h11. Generate output and create wrapper (source tab, right mouse click)
h12. Generate bitstream
h13. [File]->[Export] Export hardware with bitstream
h14. [File]->[Launch SDK] Start SDK
h15. [File]->[New]->[Other] In SDK, start new Xilinx Application Project
h16. [C application]->[src] Replace content of helloworld.c with zynq_design_test.c and save (CTRL-S)
h17. Change XHls_macc.h to xhls_macc.h and save (CTRL-S)
h18. Connect JTAG and USB cables to MicroZed board with gtkterm set to 115200 baud
h19. [Program FPGA] Download bitstream
h20. [Right click C application]->[Run as] Launch application on hardware and check output on gtkterm
h21. Close all windows

I have exactly the same problem. has anybody found a solution apart from moving into Windows?
