Hello World Speedway tutorial on MicroZed board not connecting

I think this is a JTAG connection issue.  When running the lab 2 portion of the Speedway Tutorial for the MicroZed board, I cannot get the board to be found to run the program.

This is Experiment 4, step 16 of the "Developing ZynqRegistered-7000 All Programmable SoC Hardware (Vivado 2015.2 and 2016.2)" [| Zedboard ]

 

The result is an Error Launching Program message:

 

 

I am running Vivaldo 2018.3 and Xilinx SDK 2018.3 on a Windows 10 PC.  I am using the Digilent JTAG-HS3 Programming cable.

Also tried running the Hardware Manager under Vivado, and it claims "No hardware target is open."  When I select "Open target" and select "Auto Connect" is shows  localhost(0) with a status of Connected

 

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this problem?

    Hi Larry,

     

    Please answer/do the following thanks!

     

    1. If you can, please use Vivado 2016.2 for this tutorial. Newer revisions of Vivado tend to not work as well with older material.

     

    2. Verify your board is in JTAG Boot. The hardware user guide and the Speedway should cover this. This is controlled by the 3 Boot mode Jumpers image

     

     

    3.Did you install your silicon labs driver?

    4. Have you ever gotten your board to work or is this your first attempt at a design?

    5. Are you able to try the solution example for your board? This would require you using Vivado 2016.2 (dependent on what version of tutorial your following)

    6. Verify when you created your hardware platform you correctly targeted your Microzed board, I am refering to targeting the Zynq 7010 or 7020 part and also configuring the zynq device for he correct ddr on the board.

    Thanks for the response.  Here are my answers:

     

    1. I guess I can try to unistall the latest Vivaldo version and install 2016.2, but does this mean I can never use an updated version of the software to have the JTAG connection be recognized?

     

    2. I have checked a number of times, and can verify the jumpers are as shown in the diagram.

     

    3. I did install the silicon labs driver, and can see that serial port in the Device Manager.  I have also had TeraTerm connect to that port, but since the JTAG connection is not able to program the device, there is no data traffic on the port.

     

    4. I have not had this work before.  I am attempting my first design with this, and am running the tutorial to familiarize myself with it.

     

    5. Not sure what you mean about solution example.  But I will try to do the Vivado 2018.3 uninstall and install Vivado 2016.2, and then try the tutorial again.

     

    6. I did correctly select the MicroZed board with the Zynq 7010 part.

    Hi Larry,

     

    I am not aware of your level of familiarity with Vivado, do you know how to access the hardware manager? From there you can see if you are able to access the zynq device along the jtag chain.

     

    Doing this would tell us if your issue is with your SDK project or somthing going on with the JTAG interface of your board/PC/HS3 cable.

    I had a colleague (who gave me the cable) try the JTAG-HS3 cable to try on his platform, which he had previously connected to a MicroZed board.

    He also had the problem with it not connecting now, when it used to.

     

    He found that he had mistakenly reprogrammed the FTDI chip on this cable, which was why he couldn't connect.

    He was able to download an FTDI programming file for this cable, and reprogrammed it.

     

    It is now working on both his system, and mine.  This is with Vivado 2018.3, as I had not yet done the unistall and re-install of the old version.

     

    End solution is to use a correct and uncorrupted JTAG-HS3 cable.
