Accelerate your Azure Sphere Software Development

Develop custom Azure Sphere applications faster and get to market before the competition.

Microsoft has been working on an Azure Sphere development accelerator called DevX and a companion application code generator called GenX. This development system allows engineering teams to quickly build out High Level Azure Sphere applications using proven architectural patterns and standard interfaces. Once the application is generated, the developer only needs to fill out key areas with application code to meet the project’s requirements. The system implements interfaces to send telemetry data, manage device twins, direct methods and timers with handlers. Leveraging these systems will reduce the amount of code developers write and will improve readability and long-term application maintenance.

This three part webinar series will introduce students to this system and provide hands on labs and homework assignments to reinforce Azure Sphere application development fundamentals and Azure cloud concepts. By the end of the series students will develop their own custom Secure Azure Sphere application that interacts with the IoTCentral cloud solution.

Azure Sphere MT 3620

This document goes through steps of setting up very simple blink program. The goal is to get comfortable with hardware setup and running very basic program.

Introduction

We are going to use Azure Sphere MT 3620 secure development kit. This is first dedicated hardware which handles security in IOT devices in this space.

This document explains how to create blink program. It will take you through steps needed with the assumption that you have following prerequisite

Visual Studio IDE is installed.

Wire Connection

Setup wire connection to the device and your laptop as shown below.

Setting up Azure Sphere device

Azure Sphere uses Azure Active Directory (AAD) to enforce enterprise access control.

Azure Tenant Sphere

Azure Sphere tenant allows different organization to have many devices under them.

You either need to create a new Azure Sphere tenant or user existing one for your organization.

Claiming your device

Creating the Blink project

We are using Visual Studio to create this project. Start “Visual Studio 2019” or any other version of “Visual Studio”

Create a new project

Select create new project in Visual studio project.

Select Platform

We are creating sample blink program using existing template. In order to select right template we need to select a platform from dialog box.

Select the platform from dropdown. Select “Azure Sphere”

Project name and location

Give project a name and select the location where this should be created.

Once you have created the project you can see Visual Studio open main.c file.

Debug with Device

We will see how we can debug when out Azure Sphere device is connected. Make sure your device is connected to laptop with USB. Select “Debug” , “ARM” as show in the screen below. Click on “Remote GDB Debugger”

If the device is not connected, you will see following error.

If device is connected, you will see the LED blink indefinitely.

Updating Code

Let’s try to update very simple code to understand.

We will change our code so that LED blink only 5 times.

We will define an integer variable count, MAX and use that in while condition.

Here is code which we can update in existing code as shown in picture below

int count = 0;

// Max number of blinks

int MAX = 5;

// Stop after 5 blinks

while (count < MAX)

// Increase count after each blink

++count

Conclusion

We have seen that setting up the Azure Sphere MT3620 is very easy. We can comfortably create simple blink program using template and run the program with great ease.

This device is secure and production ready IOT solution provided by Microsoft. Microsoft made reasonable effort to make it easy to work with and provided sample templated to start working with this device.

I believe this will help to move the needle in IOT space towards more secure ready to use IOT devices which is need of the time we live in.

So keep tinkering !!

And with this challenge, they proved it!

In the course of the challenge we saw projects around home security, energy monitoring, even the very timely topic of keeping the home sanitized against pathogens. We want to thank our Avnet colleagues kevinkeryk and bwilless for helping our e14 team to judge the wonderful submissions. These four projects were our favorites in a great batch, so let's celebrate these feats of home hacking!

Grand Prize

Azure Sphere Home Process Controller, by Mateusz Pajak - taimin

We often think of the home or consumer market and the industrial market as two separate worlds, but this winning project from Mateusz Pajak works to bring ideas from the factory into the home. A kind of secured homebrew programmable logic controller, as one of our judges put it, the Azure Sphere Home Process Controller could be used for many different smart home applications, given its carefully thought out and flexible design, with more rigorous security and reliability than is sometimes found on common consumer items.

Mateusz will receive a DJI Mavic 2 Pro photography drone with a Mavic 2 Fly More kit for this grand prize winning project!

Judges' Feedback

This project checks all of the boxes for me, very well documented. Also impressed by designing their own PCB accessories for the Azure Sphere Starter Kit. All around, it's a useful building management application idea.

Runners Up

Smart Toilet Paper Roll - thepenguinmaster

Lots of smart home products are obvious: refrigerators, thermostats, and, of course, toilet paper rolls! Robert Liski takes an unsung hero of the home and gives it the Robocop treatment: essential toilet paper data is tracked in the cloud, important toiler paper alerts are presented to residents, and the beautiful blinky LEDs that have always been missing from this bathroom fixture finally get added. I'm imagining Robert, dressed like Steve Jobs, presenting the final version to a rapt audience that cheers for every new feature mentioned?

Robert will receive a Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and a Sonos One smart speaker for his creative and well-realized application!

Judges' Feedback

Who doesn't love a way over-engineered household object? Well documented, great work on the hardware, a very creative application!

IntlAir - andreiflorian

Humans spend a lot of resources controlling the air in the spaces where we work and live, and the quality of that air is a major concern. Andrei Florian's project turned its attention to this important application, as he built IntlAir, a secure, automated air filter based around the Azure Sphere which monitors indoor conditions and responds accordingly. With an eye to the existing market for such products, Andrei's solution is less expensive than the competition but still fully featured by comparison, with a useful online dashboard and the advantage of being able to turn one's preferred air filter intelligent regardless of its manufacturer, increasing its flexibility.

Andrei will receive a Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and a Sonos One smart speaker for his excellent work!

Judges' Feedback

A very polished project around a pretty universal concern for indoor spaces. Great work with documenting it, and it was nice to see the consideration of how it would fit into the current market for such devices.

Honorable Mention

Home Control And monitoring using IoT - dariuszapt

Dariusz's home had a mixed setup for water heating, with a somewhat aged gas heater doing part of the work and a more modern solar heating system doing the rest. Switching between these systems was quite manual, however, so he took the opportunity of this Design Challenge to make that process smart! His IoT home control and monitoring project not only manages the water heating handoffs between the photovoltaic panels and the gas heater, it also provides an Azure Sphere IoT Central dashboard with useful and actionable data, for example reporting on when the PV panels might be losing their efficiency and in need of maintenance.

The Challenge

There are numerous smart home products on the market today, but why buy when you can D.I.Y.? We want you to use your electronics skills to build a smart home prototype based around the Avnet Azure Sphere MT3620 kit. This board is great for these kinds of applications, with built-in ambient light, temperature, and barometric pressure sensors, along with numerous expansion possibilities, including sockets for MikroElektronika click boards that open up a whole world of sensors, wireless connectivity options, and more.

Example applications for this challenge could include smart thermostats, systems that sense health hazards common to the home (carbon monoxide, VOCs, etc), smart devices to help care for your pet and plant friends, and many more.

So get cracking on your project ideas, because after all, home is where the hack is!

The Kit

The Avnet Azure Sphere MT3620 Starter KitAzure Sphere MT3620 Starter Kit supports prototyping of secure, end-to-end IoT implementations using Microsoft’s Azure Sphere. The small form-factor carrier board includes a production-ready MT3620 Sphere module with WiFi connectivity, along with multiple expansion interfaces for easy integration of off-the-shelf sensors, displays, motors, relays, and more. The downloadable getting started tutorial guides developers through the development steps from board setup to application coding.

The production-ready Sphere MT3620 module is based on the MT3620 SoC, which includes built-in Microsoft security, WiFi connectivity, and the combined versatility and power of an Arm Cortex-A7 processor with the low overhead and real-time guarantees of two Arm Cortex-M4F microcontrollers. A suite of on-chip peripherals, real-time clock, Flash, and RAM are also available. In addition to the MT3620, the 33 x 22 mm module includes a dual-band WiFi chip antenna and system clock. Up to 27 configurable GPIOs and three configurable serial ports (UART, I2C, or SPI) are provided as I/Os on the module.

The carrier board connects the Sphere module I/Os to two MikroE Click sockets, an I2C Grove connector, a connector supporting the addition of a 128 x 64 OLED graphical display, a 3D accelerometer, 3D Gyro, temperature sensor, and an ambient light sensor. Debugging is accomplished through a USB-to-UART interface, which also provides the necessary 5V power for the board.

User applications for the embedded Sphere controller are developed in C using Microsoft’s Visual Studio IDE and the Azure Sphere SDK. Visual Studio provides a development environment for compiling and debugging application code. The combination of Visual Studio, the versatile carrier card, and the production ready Sphere module delivers a powerful starting point for IoT developers interested in learning, prototyping, and deploying Azure Sphere based solutions.

The Requirements

Contestants must use the Avnet MT3620 kit as the basis of their project, but they may add further components as they choose. They do NOT need to connect to Azure cloud services with their build. If contestants do choose to incorporate Azure cloud services in their project, it will add value to their submission in the eyes of the judges, but it is not required for their projects to be considered for prizes.

Contestants will be required to post a blog fully documenting their completed, working project in the Azure Sphere space.

Blogs must include:

bill of material
code
photos and/or video
clear instructions and other relevant information so that a user following along could recreate their project.

If they post additional high-quality blogs about their build process, that will add to the credibility of their project and the judges will review those blogs, but it is not required. Here are some examples of high-quality blogs written by previous design challenge winners: RFID Fingerprint Skeleton Key, Bluetooth Smart Doorbell, and Raspberry Pi IoT Alarm Clock.

There is no application process for this Design Challenge. However, members who need a kit will have the chance to win one of 5 free MT3620 kits if they propose an interesting project in the comments on this document. This offer will be on a first come, first served basis, based on the comments they leave on the contest page. The same will apply to the above-mentioned offer of free MikroE click boards to enhance their projects.

Judging

The projects will be judged on their ingenuity, how well they achieve their stated purpose, and on how thoroughly the project is documented in your blog. Choose great project ideas that are also achievable within the allotted time frame, including the time you'll need to document what you've built. So maybe an Azure Sphere-based cold fusion reactor isn't the best idea, for multiple reasons?

The challenge judges will include element14 staff, top members of element14 who are not participating in the challenge, and guest judges from Avnet.

For a NEW project, I am connecting a Heart Rate Sensor that I have from another project to my Avnet MT3620.

The project uses the Raspberry PI and a circuit on a breadboard. The code is written In C.

The circuit (Depicted below), contains an ADC chip that takes a signal from the heart Sensor into an analog input pin on the ADC

After weeks of designing, researching, prototyping, coding, and testing, our Sensing the World Design Challenge has come to a close. We challenged our members to demonstrate potential applications for the Avnet Azure Sphere MT3620 kit, and we've been amazed at what they created!

There were 52 total project submissions, and - no surprise - it was incredibly difficult to narrow them down to 3 grand prize and 10 runner up winners. We want to extend our deepest thanks to peterfenn, bwilless, and kevinkeryk of Avnet for helping us to judge these submissions, their input was invaluable.

Without further ado, we present our three Grand Prize winners!

Sensing Dryer Lint: Improving Apartment Complex Building Safety Through IoT - grondak

A relative newcomer to the element14 Community, and he's already a grand prize winner! Tony developed an IoT device based around Azure Sphere to monitor dryer lint buildup so that building managers can be aware of this potential safety hazard.

Judges' Feedback:

A novel application, and he went to some effort creating his own custom sensor board, and documented the whole project very well.

Avnet Azure Sphere Coke Drum Health Monitoring IoT AI - Sean_Miller

A father and son duo from the Raising Awesome YouTube channel step into the future, and prototype a small-scale version of an IoT system to monitor an industrial delayed coker unit.

Judges' Feedback:

Addresses a real-world problem and tests it in an approachable way, great documentation of a design future users could recreate.

I was there! ... sensing citizens recycling - javagoza

Recycling: (hopefully) we're all trying to do it, and (hopefully) our waste is actually being put to another good use. Enrique wants to reward good citizens for recycling, so he sets up a remote monitor system for recycling bins to track how full they are and potentially issue rewards to those using them.

The element14 Community, in partnership with Avnet, is excited to announce our Sensing the World Challenge! The challenge is powered by the Avnet Azure Sphere MT3620 Starter Kit, a solution for creating secured IoT edge devices with a ton of potential applications.

This challenge has two phases:

Phase 1: Get Connected: get your kit connected to the cloud to send data
Phase 2: Sensing the World: use the kit in a real-world application by building a cool project

The Starter Kit is free* to anyone who applies, you'll only be responsible for shipping costs and any potential customs duties. For getting connected you could potentially win a $200 USD gift card, and for building your project application you can win a prize pack of Microsoft gear worth up to $3,500 USD!

Phase 1: Get Connected

Here's how to participate in Phase 1 and be eligible for the awesome prizes listed below. OCTOBER 2019 UPDATE: Phase 1 will now close November 30th, 2019, rather than October 27th, 2019. This is to accommodate those countries who were not until recently eligible for free kits, and those whose kits are ordered but still having the order filled.

1.	Register on element14Register on element14 or log in to your existing account.
2.	Navigate to the Azure Sphere space, and sign up to receive your Avnet Azure Sphere kit for free*. You will need to pay the cost of shipping and any taxes or customs duties for your country. You can still participate if your country is not eligible for free kits. See all eligible countries.
3.	Once you have your kit in hand, connect it and register it. Getting Started
4.	Once per day, for at least 15 days in a row, run the daily sync application which will let your starter kit ping Microsoft's server. On your first run of the application you will register your kit, and afterwards you will merely need to run the app again to check in. Instructions for this quick and easy process are provided here.

You have until November 30th, 2019 to complete Phase 1 and be entered in the running to win a gift card worth $200 USD (in your country's currency, of course). Go here for instructions on the sync process for Phase 1. See the Prizes section below for more details.

Phase 2: Sensing the World

Build your Sensing the World project. We want you to use the Azure Sphere kit—as well as any peripherals you’d like to connect—to build a project and document it on our community. Your design must be based around the Avnet Azure Sphere kit, but the application you choose is up to you! We want you to use your ingenuity to show the potential applications of the Azure Sphere dev platform.

Here's how to participate in Phase 2 and be eligible for the awesome prizes listed below:

1.	You must complete Phase 1: Get Connected to be eligible to win in Phase 2. You can, of course, be working on your Azure Sphere project while completing the Phase 1 requirement.
2.	You must post one blog on element14 documenting your project thoroughly. Your build must be a unique submission for this competition.
3.	Your blog needs to be posted in the Azure Sphere space on element14.
4.	Your blog must include HD quality photos and/or video(s) of your project, as well as any code used.

You have until November 30th, 2019 to complete your project and upload your blog onto the element14 community.

If you're new to our element14 Design Challenges, here are a few examples of projects that won challenges, to demonstrate both what we think is a great build and what it means to explain that build to the broader community: RFID Fingerprint Skeleton Key, Bluetooth Smart Doorbell, and Raspberry Pi IoT Alarm Clock.

Also, Hackster.io is running a sister design competition to our Sensing the World called Secure Everything, and you are allowed and encouraged to participate in both challenges!

If you propose to build a flying car with your Azure Sphere that’s super cool, but probably difficult to complete by the deadline of November 30th, 2019, so choose great ideas that are also achievable within the allotted time frame and document them thoroughly.

The challenge judges will include element14 staff, top members of element14 who are not participating in the challenge, and guest judges from Avnet.

Prizes:

Phase 1 Prizes - There will be 50 winners selected in total, who will receive gift cards worth the equivalent of $200 USD in their local currency. To be eligible for this prize, you must connect your kit to the cloud and send data once per day for 15 consecutive days, as detailed above. Phase 1 ends November 30th, 2019, so get started with Phase 1 as soon as you receive your kit!

The 50 winners will be selected after the November 30th, 2019 close of the design challenge. These winners will be selected randomly from among those who have completed the Phase 1 requirement. You may choose to compete in this challenge and only complete Phase 1, but since the prizes available for Phase 2 are much more exciting we strongly suggest you compete in both! To be eligible for Phase 2 prizes you must have also completed Phase 1.

Phase 2 Prizes - The prizes for Phase 2 are based on the project you build using the Azure Sphere kit. For Phase 2 there will be 10 runner-up prizes and 3 grand prizes. To be eligible for either a runner-up or grand prize you must have completed the Phase 1 requirements.

Each Runner-Up or Grand Prize winner can choose one (1) of the following prize bundles. The availability of the products might depend on your country, so we will work with you to be sure you get an equivalent bundle.

element14 and Hackster.io have launched two great Design Challenges based around the Avnet Azure Sphere MT3620 kit, and for members from eligible countries we have 20,000 free kits available so you can join the competitions! The registration process is simple: just be a member of the element14 Community or register for a free account, then follow the "register" link above, where all the details are provided. You will be responsible for paying any shipping charges, sales taxes, VAT, or customs duties necessary in your country when you check out with your free kit on the e-commerce site for your country. Please note that being an element14 member makes one (1) Azure Sphere kit available to you, and any abuse of the free kit system may be grounds for disqualifying your entry into the competition and cancelling your kit order.

You can do your registration for the free kit on a mobile or desktop browser and receive your voucher code, but please use a desktop browser to complete your purchase order on the e-commerce website where you apply the voucher code. Please also note that some members have had problems with their ad-blocking programs interfering with the use of the voucher code, if you are having trouble please try disabling your ad-blocker on the e-commerce page and then enter the voucher code.

Please note that in some countries the price of the kit will be reduced not totally to 0, but rather by nearly all of its face value, so the kit itself might still have a very small price attached to it. This depends on the functionality of the e-commerce site, but the kit will be free or nearly free in all regions after the voucher code is applied.

Please also note that in some countries there will show only 1 kit in stock; this is due to the functionality of the site and does not reflect the actual stock available. If the kit shows that it is in stock with at least 1 piece, there will be significant amount of stock to fill orders for the free kits. The most up to date information on whether free kits are available in your country can be found in this document, so please bookmark it.

For those who are not from a country eligible for the free Azure Sphere kits, you can still join the challenges! Just obtain an Avnet Azure Sphere kitAvnet Azure Sphere kit on your own, making sure that it is approved to work in your country, and check out the details of the challenges in our Azure Sphere space. The challenges are based around the Avnet Azure Sphere MT3620 kit; no other Azure based kits are eligible.

Please see below regarding countries which are eligible for free Azure Sphere kits. If your country is marked YES, you can order your kit using the "register" button above. If your country is marked NO, you will need to purchase your own Azure Sphere kit. If your country is not mentioned specifically, but the Azure Sphere kit is available for purchase and functions in your region, you may also join the challenges if you purchase your own kit, assuming you are eligible for our Design Challenges based on our Terms and Conditions.

We want to congratulate our three winners of the Sensing the World Connections Raffle, listed above! Each of them will be able to build a shopping cart of whatever parts they need, worth $200 USD in their currency.

And we also want to thank everyone who participated in the raffle, helping us to expand the reach of this Design Challenge and the Azure Sphere platform!

The Contest

To encourage members to get their Azure Sphere kits connected, we're hosting our Sensing the World Connections Raffle!

To enter, sync your kit daily to our contest server using the method described here during the two week period from September 11th to September 27th, 2019. The more times you connect your kit, the more raffle entries you get! You will be able to connect a maximum of once per day that will count towards this contest; further connections within the same day will not be counted beyond the first. This contest is separate from Phase 1 of our main Sensing the World challenge, so you can be a winner of both this contest and of Phase 1 in Sensing the World. Your connections during the raffle period will also count towards your total connections, if you haven't already met your Phase 1 requirement. If you have met your Phase 1 requirement already, you will still need to make additional connections to become part of this contest.

We will pick three winners: one from the Americas, one from Europe, and one from Asia / Pacific. The winners will each earn a shopping cart of parts from our e-commerce stores equivalent to $200 USD in their own currency. They can use that shopping cart to order any parts they want, restricted only by what is offered in their respective countries, to be sure we are in accordance with trade restrictions.
