What inspired your DreamBoard Design?

I was approached by our local high school science department to assist with the electronics used on a High Altitude Balloon to be launched on February 11, 2015. We had a very short time prepare, about 30 days to get everything working and ready to go. The system needed to record data, broadcast the location and telemetry among other things.

They contacted me after they have already purchased a great deal of incompatible components. They learned about me through a member of my ham radio club that works at the school. I managed to log the data collected from different sensors using a Raspberry PI and a breakout board. I collected pressure, temperature, location, humidity and altitude. The location was broadcasted via APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System).

After the launch I thought, it would be really useful for other schools and future launches to have an all-in-one ready to go board to collect and broadcast the telemetry data. I could not find anything and decided to create this DreamBoard.

What is your job role/background?

I am a Sr. Systems Engineer. I design complete systems for different industries, from the Department of Defense to Telecommunication companies. My hobbies include: Ham Radio (KC2UEZ), antenna designs, electronic gadgets, programming and gaming. I have two bachelor's degrees, Computer Engineering and Computer Science. I was born in Panama city, Panama, but I now live in Upstate New York.

Why should your DreamBoard be the winner?

This board should be the winner because it would help facilitate science projects in schools that promote learning through technology. It would allow teachers to simplify the process of launching a High Altitude Balloon making the activity more engaging and interactive as the board broadcast live telemetry data as it floats through the atmosphere.

What inspired your DreamBoard Design?

My design was inspired by my need for developing a system for diagnosing and repairing hard-to-troubleshoot systems like ultrasonic and vibration welding applications.

What is your job role/background?

My current role is controls engineer at an oem company for plastics welding technologies.

Why should your DreamBoard be the winner?

My dream board should win because it was designed with a specific goal in mind, but could be easily adapted to many roles, not only in oem manufacturing but also in the radio-imagery, telecommunications, and/or biomedical fields with nothing more than a software update.

"This board I designed with inspiration from advanced mobiles. We don't find development board for such platform. As we can see mobile apps are growing so fast, even if there are hardware limitation. Today we do almost everything with mobile phone that an individual development kit can do e.g. IoT device, Image processing, human Interface with Display, Bluetooth Accessory using On Board Sensors, Gesture Recognition, etc. Hence I found making such board if that fulfills everything mentioned examples we rarely need to buy new boards each time." What inspired your DreamBoard Design?

As we know current world is world of Smartphones, IoT devices. Slowly smartphones are replacing your daily drive computer/pc. Hence, its obvious developers like me would like to develop applications which makes use of this ecosystem in easy manner. I came accross many development boards even for IoT, but on every board one of many things are missing which can complete that board for IoT application (e.g. Sensors, Connectivity, Security, Data Management, Scalability, etc). My idea was simple, the dreamboard should be such that which can be used in multiple applications not only for specific one.

And hence my obvious inspiration for this board was smartphones which embeds almost all components that we use to experiment on.

What is your job role/background?

Currently I am working as Embedded Software Developer (BSP development for Mobile Platform). I am an Electronics Engineering

graduate.

Why should your DreamBoard be the winner

Without giving lengthy explanation this is one line- "because this is what is not available on any board,the single board to satisfy most of your need"

What inspired your DreamBoard Design?

The desire for rapid prototyping! Breadboards and shields only get you so far. Stripboard or perfboard proto-space with a microcontroller attached in an optional-snap-away portion of the board would be very exciting. Especially if there were on-board analog-to-digital capabilities to interface to your prototyped circuitry.

What is your job role/background?

I have a background in Electronic Engineering, and have also spent some time as a software developer.

My job is technical marketing – all about getting businesses to be successful through the advantages of the Internet, networks and information technology.

Why should your DreamBoard be the winner?

It meets a real need! Today we all want to do some processing in the digital domain, collect data and process it off-board, even during our prototyping stages. Often that is done with an Arduino and a prototyping shield. Stripboard++ offers a compact solution without the bizarre Arduino header-pin spacing, higher performance using a Cortex-M, far lower cost due to no need for as many header pins and mating sockets, and a far simplified development environment compared to Arduino – just use mbed!

Stripboard++ is clean and simple – it’s not trying to solve the world’s problems. It solves that need to build and test circuits (often analog but could be digital) with the support of a modern microcontroller, its associated integrated peripherals and super-simple, ultra-rapid development environment.

Stripboard++ has edge-mounted LEDs and buttons which are very practical because then it can fit any enclosure conveniently. The LEDs are a key feature for conveying status information such as analog data acquisition rate through LED flashes.

Stripboard++ is ideal for analog sensor experimentation before porting your design to an IoT platform, because the on-board ADC can be used to capture analog measurements from the prototype analog circuitry, and allow engineers to tweak the design and the software while the actual production hardware is still being designed.

Stripboard++ is easy to design and implement – just pick your favorite ARM Cortex-M from vendors such as Freescale, TI, Silicon Labs.. bring out your favorite CAD package, and keep the design simple!

"The OS is burned into NAND flash. It is a quad-core computing beast. It can sense if it's being abused, hence all of the sensors. (Of course a special daemon needs to be written to assess abuse) And it's ready to integrate with a variety of cap-sense sensors for fine-tuned implementation specific controls. It's programmable via mBed, to facilitate rapid development, should one choose to control the "bare metal, and bypass the OS. This is not, however, recommended for beginners. It will, of course, support up to 1TB of storage on the SD card (SDXC), to appease the data-logging happy developers out there. And should operating temperature and/or barometric pressure need to be assessed at the boards own location those sensors are provided. Mind you, they're low cost ones. (i.e. think submersible operations. Perhaps there's an emergency power shutoff that could be triggered on sudden pressure changes minimizing the risk of a short preserving data integrity, of not also board integrity... you did seal your data storage to prevent it from being corrupted while under water, right?)" This would include things like a light meter to check photosynthetic active radiation, lux and colour temperature.
