Ok, just kidding. I think you put together a pretty awesome blog post!

I hadn't realized that there were so many different types of RFID until I read your blog and went looking. Wow.

I did come across this interesting link that I thought you might like. It covered an introduction to RFID, the tags themselves, packaging, readers, Near Field Communication, and the card reader ICs that are available.

Hi Mark,

thanks for the interesting blog entry.

At the very least something that reads the card and controls a GPIO pin would be the minimum example in python.

So you mean a software that triggers something based on some control commands stored on the card? Ideally in Python?

Would you say, example code in C is a no go, or let's say a bad choice in the Raspberry Pi community?

What would be in your opinion the optimal package (software and addition) to get started with the EXPLORE-NFC?

One immediate use for the Red/Black car tags could be to give a younger driver (son/daughter) the ability to use a vehicle that might otherwise be deemed a tad too powerful.

Just came across this video from a belgian tv show called "De Schuur van Scheire" (or "Scheire's barn"), which fits nicely with this topic.

A belgian guy has had 2 RFID chips implanted in his hands to open door, mailbox, car, etc ... eliminating almost any key required.

Video is in dutch, but just watching it should give you an idea of what's going on.

I was always wondering about the NFC ring. Wouldn't it be rather easy for someone to subtly swipe (both sides) of the ring in a crowded subway for example, copying your information without you noticing ? The "advantage" of a physical wallet is that you would notice if it's gone, allowing you to potentially have your cards blocked before they are used. With NFC, your information might have been copied and you won't notice until it is too late.

Nice post Mark.

I agree with you about the issue of do we really need this much technology in our lives.

I can see both sides of the issue both pro and con, but I still fear others using the data for uses not necessarily to my benefit.

It is bad enough that Google sends specific adds to me based on the information it has gleaned from my internet usage.

It is a short step to having them predict what I might do next.

If that does not scare you, then you are way too comfortable with the idea of intrusion into your life.

This helps to explain some of the questions, facts and myths surrounding NFC.

I'm also curious about who are the manufacturers/players in NFC space, and what technologies exist to

run inventory on multiple items in one go (e.g. a box of items) - I heard this is possible (although might be some general

RFID and maybe not NFC - not sure. Maybe an active tag gets used).
