Iterate on design and explore form in a comprehensive MCAD environment

Quickly iterate on design ideas and use sculpting and modeling tools to explore form and finishes.  This includes:

  • Freeform modeling & sculpting - - Create smooth and precise surfaces.
  • Solid Modeling - Access robust solid modeling tools that allow you to easily create organic designs, as well as detailed mechanical parts, or a combination of both.
  • Parametric Modeling - Set precise parameters to your sketches.
  • Mesh Modeling - Bring in scanned STL or OBJ data and use them as the reference for your Fusion 360 design.

 Engineer your design with integrated simulation

Once you have settled on your design you can engineer your design, creating assemblies to validate fit and motion and photorealistic renderings and animations to verify the appearance. This includes:

  • Simulation and testing - Create tests and animate test results to help you determine the weakest areas of your model or areas that are most likely to fail. Choose from Linear Static Stress and Modal Frequency studies.
  • Data Translation - Import standard CAD formats, such as SLDPRT, SAT, IGES, STEP, STL, and OBJ. Local file export types include IGES, SAT, SMT, STEP, F3D, and DXF. Cloud export file types include Inventor 2014, IGES, SAT, SMT, STEP, DWG, DXF, STL, FBX, and F3D.
  • Assembly Modeling - Assemble your parts in the same environment in which you designed them. Choose among a variety of different joint types, such as rigid, revolute, slider, cylindrical, pin-slot planar, and ball.
  • Joint & Motion Studies - Get a sense of how the assembly could behave as a working prototype by activating all the joints in a fully animated motion study.

 Fabricate your design

Use the 3D print workflows to create a rapid prototype or the CAM workspace to create toolpaths to machine your components. This includes:

  • 2 and 2.5-axis machining - The CAM capabilities of Fusion 360 share the same proven CAM kernel as HSMWorks and Inventor HSM™, enabling you to quickly generate toolpaths that cut cycle times, reduce machine and tool wear, and produce the highest-quality finished parts. 2D strategies include drilling, contouring, pocketing, facing, and adaptive clearing.
  • 3D Printing Utility – Prepare your designs for 3D printing by previewing the mesh structure, making pre-print refinements, and automatically creating optimized support structures. Fusion 360 is easily used with Autodesk® Print Studio and Autodesk Ember™3D printer, as well as a variety of 3D printers, including Type A Machines, Dremel, MakerBot, and Ultimaker.
  • Drawings - Rapidly specify views, dimensions, and tolerances with associative 2D drawings, which can be updated with just a click if changes were made to the original model downstream. Archive them locally as DWG or PDF.
  • 3-Axis Machining - In addition to all the existing 2-axis strategies, 3-axis CAM offers parallel toolpaths, horizontal clearing, penciling, scallop/constant stopover strategies, and spiral/morphed spiral for more organic designs.

 Collaborate & manage

Fusion 360 brings design teams together for collaborative product development. The Fusion 360 data panel and activity dialog enables:

  • Distributed Designs - Multiple contributors can create and modify referenced components within a project, allowing teams working in various geographic locations to work much more efficiently. Distributed design allows you to insert one Fusion 360 design into another and maintain an associative link between the two. If the linked design is modified, you can choose whether you’d like to update the referenced design to reflect the changes. Open designs just as you left them and Fusion 360 will highlight referenced components that are “out of date” and allow you to update them individually or as a whole.
  • Synchronous design reviews - Review a design with team members and clients in multiple locations in real time. In a live review session, teams can view edits made to the model from within Fusion 360 as well as interact with the model in their web browser.
  • Track, comment, and share - Invite unlimited team members to your projects. Keep track of versions, and view the work others have done within the project through a live activity feed. You also can keep track of progress and team activities via the A360 Team application in your web browser.
  • Version Management - See the project versions your team has been working on within Fusion 360. Save multiple versions of your designs in the cloud with A360 Team or archive them locally. You have the flexibility to review previous file versions and boost them to the top of version history to iterate from a previous design.  Easily find components embedded in complex design files and data archives using an integrated search engine.
