BeagleBoard.org releases Debian for BeagleBone Black

Hi all,

I have not found where to put my question,and I have almost no idea of linux...

I have the Angstrom image on the eMMC, and I boot the debian image from the sd card (no cape used, just keyboard, mouse and a TV connected in the HDMI), the debian starts as a user, and if I want to start root terminal, it asks for a password. Does anyone know that password?

What I am doing by now is logging out, and after that logging in as root. Is it posible that the debian starts as root instead of user?

Hi Miguel,

If it is the debian image from here, then the following credentials can be used:

uasername: debian

password: temppwd

I can't recall what the root password was, but it was either root, temppwd or no password was set.

The problem is that I cannot use the root terminal, and I don't know if I have the same permissions with the user debian than as a root (I suppose not). I am starting with Linux and sometimes not always I understand how things works...

For example, If I try to modify the uEnv.txt file from the desktop envoirement I have in return a no permission message, just to be able from the Desktop I have to log out, and log in as a root.

Fortunately, here in element14 there is quite information about linux in single-board, as BBB

I wasn't sure, do you mean you can successfully log in as user debian, but not as root?

If so, you can execute any root user command by typing 'su' once you're logged in as user debian, from the command line. If you run any program from the GUI that needs root access, it will prompt you for the root password.

Most of the time you won't want to be root user, and when you do (e.g. to install a program) you can use the 'su' command to become root user.

The BBB starts as user (debian image), and if I want to use the root terminal from the GUI, it asks for a password, or even if I try to use 'sudo' in the terminal (not the root one), it also asks for password, and no password is supposed to be set.

Althouth it is not a big deal.

What I am doing now is using the debug header, or connect to the BBB from a putty on my PC over the ethernet port on the BBB.

The root terminal application does not work correctly and will be removed from future releases of Debian. It requires a root password to be entered, and none is assigned by default.

You can get a root login by logging out of the LXDE environment and logging in again as root (with no password). Now you can run GUI apps as root.

I find the default user works best for most things, and sudo works for most things when you need root privledges. If you need a root terminal you can use "sudo su" to get root access, then exit to return to the debian user access. You can run gui apps from the root terminal using the command line, i.e. leafpad filename (editor) or pcmanfm (file manager).

Yeah Dennis!! That is what I am doing by now logging in as a root in the LXDE environment. Changing files like uEnv.txt needs root priviledges, and they are easier to deal with over GUI than over terminal...
