BeagleBoard.org releases Debian for BeagleBone Black

I think this is great news for the usability of BBB, BeagleBoard.org has released Debian image for the BeagleBone Black!

BeagleBone (Runs on BeagleBone Black as well without flashing the eMMC)

  • Definitely :-) The Angstrom was such a sore point, any other build would have been better. I've only tried the earlier pre-release Debian builds, they were missing a lot of packages, hopefully they are present by default on this official released one. Looking forward to trying it!!

    2GB eMMC is likely to mean what is installed by default will be minimal in some respects. Everyone will want something different anyway.. The good thing about Debian is that the packages will be available to install even if they're not installed by default.

     

    I welcome the move to Debian as it'll give a lot of people a better initial experience.

     

    At the same time I'll miss the stripped down very much embedded feel you got with angstrom. As we've explored elsewhere, various things run faster on angstrom compared to debian as there's less baggage with angstrom.  I won't miss angstrom itself; the idea was good, it was the implementation that failed.

    Yeah, I've noticed it as startup takes a while longer (Angstrom was super-quick). Packages are lean as you say. But right now everything I've tried works (not done a lot with it yet though). Now need some more BBBs! There was some news article yesterday about some huge bitcoin mining operation using RPIs. (Presumably for the FPGA orchestration). They had sucked up thousands of RPIs. In a similar vein maybe some other organisation has found a need for low-cost computing platforms too and has started hoarding BBBs.

    Radio Shack in the USA has started selling overpriced RasPi and BBB "starter kits", so they may have sucked up a lot of RasPi and especially BBB inventory.  However, they're in financial trouble and just announced they're closing 1100 stores (approx 20% of total) image.  So maybe we'll see a bunch of BBBs flood the market one of these months.
