BB view 7" LCD colours incorrect using Angstrom supplied

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

Using a BeagleBone Black and BB view with 7" LCD Panel.

With the Angstrom distribution supplied with BB view the colours are incorrect, (it seems there is the RED/BLUE switch) has anyone else experienced this and

know of a solution.

The board is working correctly since the TI demo software displays colours correctly.

I suggest looking at the first post in http://www.element14.com/community/message/102166/l/how-to-bb-view-on-latest-debian while that's talking about debian, the colour swap issue is probably due to the same thing, so the same fix may work.

Okay I thought I'd clarify the issue just so there is no confusion. I've attached two images which show the colour problem. One is a photograph of the LCD showing the colour wheel from the setting the desktop background colour.

    image

The second is the same image taken as a screenshot from a VNC connection of the same screen.

    image

You can see how the colour wheel is different in each.

So after installing the software updates for BB view as supplied with the board for Angstrom on the standard build supplied with the Beaglebone Black the colours are incorrect.

I know with the Debian beta there are issues as selsinork kindly identified but I would have thought that someone else with this combination of 7" LCD board and Beaglebone Black would have seen this. I don't think my board is faulty because the TI Demo software downloaded from this site works with the correct colours as far as I can see.

This is an image from the TI Sitara Linux Trainng page

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Sitara_Linux_Training:_Hands_on_with_the_SDK

    Sitara-linux-training-matrix-main-menu.png

Here is a picture from the LCD. (I know the icons are in a different order but the colours look correct, sorry about the picture quality)

    image

Could someone with the 4.3" LCD run the same test and let me know if they have the same issue?

Assuming it's a real issue I would have thought there should be a new version. I've checked the embest site and the Angstrom image is 4 months old. (Also embest has been purchased by Farnell)

I don't really want to patch the code I think the software supplied should work. So how about an update Farnell?

Embest were bought by farnell quite some time ago The specified item was not found.

They build several common / popular boards for farnell, Sabre-Lite and MarSboard Freescale i.MX6 Development Platforms, RIoTboard and they're an official BeagleBone Black second source under http://beagleboard.org/logo

With all that behind them, you might expect some good support, but historically it hasn't been the case. There has been the odd, infrequent, update. Mostly they seem to just stick with the older BSP.

In the BB-View case, it's somewhat problematic as it's an embest/e14/farnell design, and some things are very different from the other LCD capes sold by CircuitCo.  Combine different board with infrequent updates and you can see where it's headed.

I have the 4.3" version, the TI SDK appeared to work fine, and I didn't see the colour swap problem using simple framebuffer console.  However that's with a 3.13 or thereabouts mainline kernel, not angstrom.

While I agree that the supplied software should work, personally I wouldn't waste my time with angstrom anymore. Now that BeagleBoard.org are changing to Debian, it's not worth the effort.

Yes, that leaves an open question of why the demo image hasn't been updated to Debian...

Thanks for the background information and the feedback about using the 4.3" version. I agree about the switch to Debian and from the little I've used Angstrom I think the transition to using Debian is a sensible move.

I have tried the Debian changes but they didn't seem to work for me but I'll try again so see whether I made any mistakes.

I do feel disappointed that there isn't a working version supplied with the board and if you feel the same way please reply to this message and vent your frustration and you never know it may help to get some support.

I posted a bug report on Tuesday 6th May to tech support and after no response followed up on Monday 12th May.

I'm promised a response by Friday 16th May. I'll let you know what the feedback is.

    Tony,

Can I ask where/how you reported it?  Most of the RIoTboard stuff, www.riotboard.org etc. redirects to here and as you've seen there's not a lot of obvious official support here, just what we manage to do ourselves.  So I'd be interested how you raised it.

I'm not sure if I used the correct channels but since the BB-VIEW is a Farnell product I initially e-mailed tech support at 'techsales@farnell.co.uk'. When I didn't get a response I called the Farnell switchboard and followed up.

I have been contacted by Farnell and the problem has been escalated to embest R&D so things are happening. Once I hear more I'll post another update.

So it's looking at bit more promising about getting an official solution.
