style="margin:0;">I own a pair of GizmoSphere Gizmo 2 SBC's and with the first I also bought an AMD GX-420CA 4-Core, 2Ghz processor and more recently I purchased 5 (but only need 4 of them) Micron MT41K256M16HA-125E DDR3 RAM chips. I'd like to install them all, but I want to make certain that I will not have an issue after having made such changes.

I know that GizmoSphere had intended to install 2GB of RAM chips from the start (but for $ savings did not), but I've seen no evidence that the 4-Core AMD GX-420CA 2Ghz processor had been intended, yet it's power usage is close enough to the AMD GX-210HA they did use that it should be fine so long as I don't overdo the use of the additional PCI slots through the High Speed Connector.

1) So, will the GizmoSphere Gizmo 2 work just fine and display all of the RAM of the 2GB RAM chips, or "No!"

2) Will the GizmoSphere Gizmo 2 work fine with the AMD GX-420CA, or is it too power hungry (or otherwise) to allow function of the SBC?

Remembering the biggest problem with the Gizmo was the lack of memory, the Ubuntu image Ive been using takes up around 450MB of the 750MB available to the system (I think the other 250MB is used for graphics share) so this leaves only a small amount for applications.

Im planning to try and create a minimal Debian install running LXDE desktop, on my office computer I have this setup and the memory footprint hangs out at around 188MB which would create a significant saving for applications on Gizmo.

Fingers crossed it should be straight forward, if so I'll update my experience here once I get it up and running.

----------FIRST EDIT------------------------

So I managed to install Debian as above using the standard installer with a slight modification to the boot command line and have a graphical desktop, altogether it runs in a memory footprint of around 233MB which is a significant saving of resources. I'm going to have another try tomorrow and see if I can shave some more off by quitting the installer and forcing just the very basics (the installer puts in lots of unneeded stuff), also some things like dragging a selection box seem to be a bit laggy so on my next try I'll attempt to install the fglrx graphics driver from an earlier blog post to speed up the graphical systems, provided they're compatible with Debian Jessie this should should create a significant performance increase.

Once I settle on a final system I'll post a guide showing how I got there

Windows 7 / Windows 10 / Linux experiences on Gizmo2

On my Gizmo2 I've installed a variety of operating systems. Some work better than others, but I'll try my best to explain what I've been able to (and not been able to) do over the past year:

I'm using my Gizmo2 with a 128gb SSD with the PCIe detect pin taped over.

1. Windows 7:

Works. Works quite well, actually. Main limitation is RAM, 1GB really hamstrings you on what you can do. Runs out of RAM when doing Windows Updates, runs out of RAM when doing anything other than nothing. The only way to make it usable is to replace the shell with whatever I want to use. I have AMD's drivers installed, everything in device manager works EXCEPT for HDMI audio output and Realtek audio output. Can't seem to figure it out. Have tried every combination of AMD HDMI audio driver and Reaktek driver available, down to tracking down other boards with the same embedded APU. My first inclination was to try to use it as a Steam Link - basically streaming real-time video gaming over the network. Works quite well but the very slow GPU makes the Big Picture mode very very slow. No audio over HDMI also kills that possibility.

2. Windows 10:

Pretty much the same as Windows 7 except with even less available RAM.

3. Linux (Linux Mint):

Complete lack of GPU acceleration makes it very very slow. Audio over HDMI works in Linux. Not sure what GPU module the pre-flashed Linux distro is using but I couldn't find an open-source module that works as well.

I've attempted to contact my element14 rep that provided the review sample, as well as the Gizmo2 hardware engineers and AMD and no one has been of any help.

Using the Gizmo2 GPIO ports under Windows

I'm running Windows Embedded Standard 7 32-bit on the Gizmo2. The Gizmo has the mPCIe slot for the mSATA card, and there are holes in the PCB lining up with the mSATA screwholes. But, there are no screws, and there are no threads to screw into. So I can push the mSATA card into the slot, but there's nothing to hold it in place. It wiggles and falls out. Same for the screwholes at the half-card locations. In short words the rules are the following

Desk unit : This is the most simple model; it will include a series of peripheral devices, a small case (fit back to a HDMI monitor) and an internal 60 Gb SSD disk with the entire system onboard. The provided application will be web based and the operating system will be Ununtu 14 LT, this means the entire system is 100% open source. The Gizmo2 is connected to a 1Gb switch and is part of an independent node of a local network.

Server unit: This is a single gizmo2 module that will be setup in a small expandable cluster. It should host a ssd internal disk for Linux operating system and a 500 Gb or 1 Tb external HDD for databa storage

All the machines are on the same LAN with 1Gb network

The Server unit will be clustered if needed with other self-balancing network devices

The machine external HDD machines will use the two USB3 Gizmo2 as dual raid hdd storage. USB3 has almost the same access speed than the SATA bus.

The machine will use eventually the external HDD connected to the on-board second sata port.

The machine is powered by a 4000 mA power supply giving the extra-power needed for the attached peripherals.

The second SATA connector and the SATA 5V power cables

Inside this scenario (if needed images are also available) I experience some issues that seems very probably hardware-dependent. What I need is some good check advices to verify for sure the issues causes.

Need to use components

The external parts that should be used are the following (for various kind of settings:

External 500 Gb 2.5" HDD (5V)

For now it is used a 1Tb 5" 12V + 5V HDD externally powered that will be replaced in the definitive configuration with the specific hardware. The difference in this case is meaningless Two disks will be connected to the USB3 via a SATA to USB3 converter that reaches a comparable speed. The following image shows the HDD connected in this way with an external powered dock.

mPCIe board with Parallel + serial interface

This is a micro PCIe board that has the same connector as the micro SATA. The system boots and the only thing shown on the screen is "Booting from HD" then the system does not goes ahead.

Installing the OS on the external HDD (both Debian and Ubutu): same as 1)

The only way until now I was able to install Linux Ubuntu 14 was on the internal SSD (120 Gb) that boot fine after installation without any issue.

Problems with the two SATA ports

The second SATA port is on the board (thanks again to for her precious previous tests and shared knowledge !!!) and it is not populated. As the documentation explain it is a second port, we should expect that it can work with the first one connected. Instead:

A. With a 120Gb SSD on the first mSATA and any kind of SSD or HDD connected to the second SATA port as explained above none of the two disks are saw at boot time (only the micro SD if present).

B. With the mPCIe adapter (Serial + Parallel) in the primary port and the HDD on the SATA port, it is saw but does not work correctly. Instead with the SSD connected to the SATA (second port) it is not saw at all at boot time.

C. As the SSD or MPICEe boards are removed from the bottom connector, the SATA disk is saw correctly. Only the HDD can be connected and the operating system installed as well.

D. Only if the 120 Gb SSD is connected to the bottom port can be formatted and the operating system installed correctly.

Problems with OS booting

The same Linux OS has been installed with success on the external HDD (via the second SATA connection and external power), the microSD and the SSD (connected on the bottom connector). The only installation version that boots correctly is when the ssd is in its place and nothing else is connected to the system. The only accepted second HDD is when it is connected to the USB3 via the SATA to USB3 dock.

After booting from the Ubuntu desktop surprisingly all the linux installations on the three different media are virtually identical, despite that does not boot or boot partially, as shown in the images below:

The only possible bootable configuration

The only possible bootable configuration is from the SSD on the bottom connector with the external HDD connected to the USB3 port.

I hope that someone has some new idea to solve the problem, suggestions etc.

Thanks in advance. Could not get anything installed threw USB - 3 . I installed it on a ADATA mSATA 64 GB . I also got a

no drive error message the first time. How can I set up this?

2) Would be nice to disable the Ubuntu boot logo, or even better, control when the projector starts receiving HDMI signal. I'm sure the first thing is possible. But is the second possible to do? I'd like the projector to start displaying something after the OpenGL program has started. Otherwise I would probably need to add a mechanical shutter to block the projection for some time which isn't ideal...

3) Disable any kind of OS or included program notifications. The device needs Ubuntu just to start running the Panda3D library program, any interference might result in not working properly. This includes any "OS has restarted after some unexpected crash" or similar messages. How can all this be disabled?

I had originally asked this to ubuntu users but haven't gotten a response. Unfortunately I discovered that Windows8.1 ( ) can't be installed on devices that are not connected to the mSATA device; no USB hard disk, uSD etc. So the solution is to add a SSD (as in the technical specifications) to the bottom of the Gizmo2 where there is the mSATA connector.

The following image shows finally the W8.1 embedded setup starting from the USB Stick (a crap adapter )

My doubt is how the connector on the SSD (not set as external but as internal device, obvious) should be to fit on this board.
