I think I have a problem with the ssh connection. I have no " dropbear " file in the "etc" directory. So I can not implement the above proposed solution. Can you help me ?

RE: Some quick-start things to do for developing on the BBB

I found the drivers did not install smothly on Windows 8 64-Bit. There was an error message something like: "Default language not supported by this installer". After a lot of faffing about and searches on the web (mostly irrelevant results about the old Beaglebone talking about FTDI drivers which are not relevant to the Black) I eventually got the solution: use a zip program (I used 7-Zip) to unpack the BONE_D64.exe file, then start Device Manager. Right-click on the "Linux USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget" and the "Gadget Serial" nodes and Update Driver Software specifying the directory containing the unpacked drivers.

Another good quick-start tip is to install VNC so you can use the Beagleboards GUI without having to sort out the HDMI connection and a keyboard and mouse. This requires a network cable to your router and the USB cable to the PC. Follow the startup instructions to log in using SSH, then:

opkg update

opkg install x11vnc

x11vnc -bg -o %HOME/.x11vnc.log.%VNCDISPLAY -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm*/database -display -forever -nopw

Now you should be able to connect to the Beagleboard either over the USB virtual network connection or via the wired network connection (after the installation, the network connection is no longer necessary and it works fine with just the USB cable).

To make the VNC server start automatically after a reboot do the following:

Type the x11vnc command line above into a file called "VNCServerStart.sh". Right-click on the file icon and take 'properties' then the 'permissions' tab. Check the 'Execute' permission. Go to System, Preferences, Startup Applications, Add an entry to run this script file.

RE: Some quick-start things to do for developing on the BBB

It's not actually vi at all, its vim-tiny or some such like.

Disclaimer: I hate vi in all it's incarnations.. However whatever the version in use on the BBB it's sufficiently different in even the tiny subset of features I ever use to make echo, sed and awk preferable.

I think I've now had versions of 'vi' on BBB, RPi, SL that all behave very differently from each other and all differently from the usual vim style that people will be more used to from bigger distros (vim itself being different from true vi as well).

Traditions are good, but some really need to be left to die. vi with odd behavioural problems is up there on top of the list.
