do you use BeagleBone boards personally or professionally?

I have a few boards in my electronics box, but haven't used them for a few years (or ever).

Looking at the beagleboard.org website, it somehow got more confusing than it used to be. It is hard to find software images and later I realized why - the OS is not compatible with all boards they way Raspberry Pi OS is.

BeagleBone Blue (ready to be used with various motors), Green, White, XM disappeared. BeagleBone Black has more than a year old OS images (Debian Buster), only newer boards have Debian Bookworm.

It is great that the boards are open-source, but with uncertain SW support, I wouldn't used them professionally. I do use Raspberry Pi professionally, because the compatibility and OS support is excellent.

What do you think?

David

Can a BBB run Debian 11.7 GUI?

I inherited an Element14 Beaglebone Black from my grandson and tried to install the latest Debian 11.7 GUI software image on it from https://www.beagleboard.org/distros/am335x-11-7-2023-09-02-4gb-emmc-xfce-flasher.

The GUI loads the first time I boot after flashing, but subsequent boots go to a command prompt, and when I try to install anything it says "no space left on device", leading me to think the only way to run a GUI is off SD even though I got the image directly from the BBB software images. Any other ideas?

I don't have a specific application for this, just wanted to use the UI to play around with it. I've also noticed from previous times I had a UI running, my 802.11n Edimax USB wifi module and browser are incredibly resource intensive and slow even with the router only 20 feet away. Would an older, non-GUI OS solve the slow wifi performance?

Thanks,
Bob

Free e-book today: Building a Home Security System with BeagleBone

Book "Building a Home Security System with BeagleBone" by Bill Pretty is freely avalaible today at publisher site: https://www.packtpub.com/free-learning. You need to claim it today and you get access to it forever. I have not read it, but written reviews on Amazon are quite positive. There are few negative ratings, but reviewers did not write textual review, so it is not clear what's wrong with book (if any). It is about 11 years old, but still may be interesting because electronics does not date so quickly (in comparison with computer science, for example). In comparison with other paid books, it is not that long (120 pgs).

Welcome the BeagleY-AI !

Beagleboard have brought out a new single-board computer aimed at artificial intelligence and it's in a form factor that's very different to its previous offerings:

The BeagleY-AI is available to pre-order from our online stores and I'm told we will have stock from June/July time, if not earlier. Meanwhile, the documentation is being fleshed out more than it is already, so we could consider this a 'soft launch'.

This beagleboard intends to be an affordable Ai accelerated board compared to other offerings, and at about £57 the price is rather nice!

FTDI to USB cable for BeagleBone

Hello Guys ,

Has the BBBI any conformal coating? The reference manual states "The element14 BeagleBone Black Industrial is based on the BeagleBone Black Rev C design and supports a wider operating temperature range and is conformally coated", but there is no reference about the coating used (brand/model)

As well, looking at a board, we cannot see clearly if there is any coating, and using an UV lamp does not show anything else (some coatings have UV markers that shine under UV lamp for visual inspection).

So, on my recommendation the company I work for have switched a design to use BeagleBone Black instead. It seems to be going OK so far. This sort of hardware is not our core business and it's not a particularly demanding application, but it'll be interesting to see how it goes.

As our development team are very familiar with Microsoft's .NET, it'll be running a .NET Core - which works surprisingly well if you want cross-platform (i.e. Windows and Linux) stuff.

Another board - BeagleV-Ahead

Hot on the heel of the BeaglePlay, it seems there's another new BeagleBoard offering - the BeagleV-Ahead.

But if it is not possible to do this with the help of timers, then please tell me how can such a frequency be measured at all?

I'm using the latest Ubuntu Linux for BeagleBone, kernel 4.

What hinders your BeagleBone project?

You could call this a series of discussions...

When I was first introduced to BeagleBone, the BeagleBone Black was just released, and I managed to kill it. 5 volts on a 3.3v logical input without being aware thanks to a devicetree not being updated for an LCD display, but I had no idea, I'd only just been given the hardware and I was entirely new to it. Completely killed the kit. Then there was the difficulty of working with assembly for the PRUSS... it was a long list of interruptions.

So what tends to stop you from developing with a BeagleBone? Do you find that you encounter a problem part way through the project? Is it some knowledge you're lacking or is it the software? Is it how the hardware behaves or doesn't how you expect it to? Is it the operating system when you want to work bare bones or bare metal with the hardware?

Would you benefit from help with Linux? Or is it something else?

We're looking at expanding our content and what we ask from BeagleBoard to help introduce their products and guidance on their products, and I'm interested in what you need help with, so reply and let us know, regardless of knowledge level.

Which best audio player to match with BBB?

Which choice for a good match between BBB and an audio player?
