I have been eyeing a dead tablet that I bought.

My wife plugged in the wrong power cord and blasted the charging circuit, but the display should be fine.

Definitely on my to do list once I get the RioT board up and running.

Great project, I have a stack of old laptops waiting for something like this. I will get stuck in when I get back from holiday.

Where did you get the mini-hdmi adapter board I see connected to the riot board in the photo ? I'd bought a normal mini-hdmi cable with the intention of butchering it to use for this, but an adapter like that could be a better idea.. The display I have is also a 1024x768 and seems to only use a single link, however another slightly newer 1024x768 seems to want a dual-link. So while it'll certainly be possible with some panels, I'm no longer sure the necessary panels will be quite as common as I originally thought.
