Ground fill area problem

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

I have a question about fill areas.  I have noticed that if I want to have a fill area over an entire board, such as a ground plane, I can place a polygon around the board and name it something like "EarthG" and it works fine.  The fill will surround the pads and traces properly.  However, If I have any other filled areas on the board like just around a few pads, the fill area for the ground goes directly over the other fills without any regards to being different names.  Why?  The only way I've found to avoid this is to manually use traces to fill in the areas I want filled in and then the larger surrounding fill will avoid those areas.

    Hi David,

I hope you're doing well. They short out, because by default all

polygons have the same rank. The key to getting the polygons to separate

is to use a different rank for the two or more polygons. A rank of 1 is

the highest priority while 6 is  the lowest priority. In your example

the internal polygon would have a rank of 1 and the big polygon would

    have a rank of two.

The rank can be adjusted by looking at the properties of the polygon.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

I see this question over and over again, and I'm thinking, wouldn't it be

nice if the inner polygon always got render priority?

Only in case of partly overlapping polygons, the need for the rank parameter

    would come up.

Thank you for the help.  It does seem, however, that no matter the 'ranking', polygons should be treated just like the routes and pads in that they are all named somehow, regardless of 'ranking' and should, therefore be avoided by other fill areas that have different names.  Seems like this should have been taken care of in version 1 instead of having to manually rank things.

OK, so you are saying that right now the program won't allow me to

manually change the ranking of the polygons right?

    Hi David,

Unfortunately, not right. You can change polygon rank at any point in

time. Just use the info command and click on one of the edges of the

polygon. In the properties dialog, you'll see a parameter called Rank

and you can adjust to the appropriate value.

    hth,

    Jorge Garcia

    Sorry,

I was responding to your system that emailed me only the last part of the conversation.  I tried to edit my response, which you did get, but it obviously also sent you this too.  I saw that I had not read the entire discussion and so this was sent in eror.

    Thanks again for the help.
