I ported source code to the Pi Pico. It is in my TMF8828 GitHub repo, in the tmf8828_experiment_board folder.

I made the mistake of trying to port someone else's code, who had ported it to a Renesas chip, from the original Arduino library provided on the ams/Osram website. Whoever had done the port, had done it badly; they'd shoved all source code into a load of header files! So I had to split it out into something normal. I should have just started from the original Arduino library.

Anyway, when run, I do see responses from the sensor, as a stream of values, and they change depending on if there's something placed in front of the sensor or not. I still need to figure out why a lot of the values are zero though. Also, this is without a window in front of the sensor, it's bare currently, so it won't be behaving correctly (as I understand, the window may be vital, because I believe it provides an amount of 'crosstalk', and that is required for the time-of-flight to be calculated). I'm not 100% certain yet; perhaps sufficient crosstalk is present even without the window. It needs to be a certain amount, not too high, not too low.

There's supposed to be a calibration routine to run too. I need to figure these things out still. However, at least the board is functioning, and the code is doing something!

Example output dumped over the USB UART:

It's too close to the board, I can't see anything. However, while the solder was being reflown with the hot-air tool, the part did bob down and up when pushed with tweezers from the top. But that's only a 75% guarantee that all the pads are connected! I'll only reattempt reflowing if it doesn't function, since it was already a risk getting flux into the windows. I've got two layers of tape on the top, but when wiping off the flux from the board, there's a chance some could still seep through.

The part is well-centered though. I always place a silkscreen outline to help with visual alignment.

The rest of the parts will be hand-soldered with an iron.

RE: Engineer-to-engineer: understanding time-of-flight sensing

I knew it was going to be small, but seeing it in person shows just how small!
Quite an intricate part. In the photos below, the laser is on the left side, and the darker, blue-tinted right side contains the lens covering the sensor, i.e. the SPAD (single-photon avalanche diode) array.
