Thanks for the inquiry. Unfortunately we do not have any double chamber boxes.

The best I can offer is IP65 sealed diecast metal boxes, such as the 5000 series5000 series, remembering to buy the gasketgasket to achieve the IP65 seal.

Two years ago Camden Electronics and Boss Enclosures merged to create a robust company offering a healthy selection of electromechanical products. I am responsible for the product support on the components (Camden) side, Dan Smalley is responsible for the enclosures (Boss). There were some cross-over products, Camden enclosures, and both of us are 'experts' in these.

Suppose you are working on a an electrical installation which is DIN rail mounted, how do you modify and adapt it? Could be tricky.

Are you seeing signs of a recovery?

I just wanted to get the views of you, the people we deal with.

From my point of view things are very different to how they were in 2008. I don't even work for the same company, but I can tell the UK electronic components industry has taken a fair hammering. Anecdotes from my colleagues now talk of how very large orders were commonplace, the likes of which we rarely see now.

The distributors seem to be doing OK, some better than others, but is that because manufacturers have stopped buying direct (because they can't) and turned to distis instead?

Or am I just being pessimistic?

Will we stay like this for a while? Will we stay like this forever? Are some of the trends (e.g. moving production to the Far East) irreversible? Is the market just adjusting itself for good?

As an economist, I find this all quite interesting, though I would rather watch a speedy recovery.

Yes, but according to participants in the CEO Roundtable at Electronica growth in the semiconductor industry will slow to single digits in the first quarter of 2011. It is part of what these executives called a "return to normalcy" meaning less pronounced up-and-down swings than in the past couple of years.

Very slowly....

It seems that as the world's leaders may figure out that taxing the small businesses (especially the ones where original thinking takes place),

only delays people getting back to work.

Outsourcing has led to sending the majority of a company's gross income abroad, so the fat cats at the top can collect a smidgen more profit.

Of course, the locals can no longer afford that company's products because they have no work. And in most cases, the products are above the means of the foreign (cheap) labor, so they don't buy it either.

Can you say lose-lose situation?

It is a very interesting question..or questions since there are several.

I know at Farnell we are doing very well at the moment. The sudden upturn in demand for components means it has taken a while to ramp up production for some producers. I think people have more confidence ordering from distributors such as Farnell, when they can see what is available, rather than maybe suffering from lead times from buying direct. If someone wanted to buy a large quantity of components directly, would there be much of a lead time?

Maybe the solution to this is the ownership of production facilities rather than outsourcing. Outsourcing production sounds good financially, but when things change for the better everyone floods independant facilities with orders..and where you are in the queue probably depends on the size of the order. Companies seem to move where production cost is lowest and access to markets and tax benefits are best. Being from "silicon glen" myself, I've seen IBM, Compaq, Digital, and a few more come and go. Can China keep production costs low forever?

Globally almost every country, maybe with the exception of China, has deficit problems, some more serious than others, hello Ireland! I think the whole situation depends on how governments go about cutting deficits without stifling recovery. This is especially true with the US, whose economy still leads the world.

Steatite or Porcelain?

CamdenBoss supplies a range of high temperature resistant terminal blocks called the CHTB range. In the marketplace there are two material types, Steatite and porcelain. CamdenBoss’s are porcelain, but what are the differences?

Porcelain is a naturally occurring ceramic, Steatite is man-made.
Steatite has a higher power density and is easier to form than porcelain.
Porcelain has a higher working temperature at 350°C versus Steatite’s 200°C.
Porcelain is it is better suited in outdoor applications.

Battery balancer road test

Background

Many electrically powered vehicles, such as golf buggies, mobility scooters and go-carts use two or more batteries connected in series and it is important to charge the batteries equally for optimum performance and extended life.

Using the CamdenBoss CEQ12A prevents mismatched voltages at which batteries stabilise when charged in series. Without a balancer (or equaliser), one battery will be undercharged while the other is overcharged. The CEQ12A ensures that each battery in a pair receives the same voltage by measuring the total charging voltage, calculating its middle value and adjusting the voltage to each battery to be equal within 0.1V.

We tested it in an electric go-cart which has five batteries connected in series, supplying 60V to the motor. This system is charged by a 72V supply (14.4V x 5).

Charging without balancer

When charging the batteries as normal with a 72V/20A charger the final voltages on each battery were checked. The five final voltages were: 13.9 + 14.5 + 14.3 + 14.8 + 14.5 = 72V. There are clear differences in the charged voltages meaning that there will also be differences in the state of charge of each battery. The overall capacity of the system is determined by the capacity of the battery with the lowest charge. If one of the batteries becomes fully discharged, there will be a significant drop in voltage and the system will operate poorly.

When charged without balancers, the go-kart ran at full speed for six minutes.

Charging with balancer

Using the same charger with CEQ12 battery balancers resulted in the following final voltages:
14.3 + 14.4 + 14.4 + 14.5 + 14.4 = 72V.

Charged with balancers the go-cart ran for 10.5 minutes at full speed

How and why

Two or more batteries connected in series never charge equally. One always accepts a lower terminal voltage than the other. As a consequence, both (or all) batteries will have shorter lives with undercharged batteries suffering from build up of sulphate while the electrolyte will tend to dry up in overcharged batteries. Both conditions reduce the lifetime of the batteries.

The CEQ12A balancer measures the total charging voltage for a pair of batteries, calculates its middle value and adjusts the voltage to each of the two batteries to be equal within 0.1V. This ensures even charging. The maximum current that will flow is approx. 1A. This results in increased starting current due to the balance of charging and extended battery life.
