The “novel” approach to this converter design is that it utilizes a very space compact Cirrus Logic IC with a 2-cm (0.75-inch) square-footprint. The SA306-IHZ is a monolithic three-phase switching amplifier1,2 from the Apex Precision Power product family that is typically targeted at brushless motor control drives. The SA306-IHZ is depicted schematically in this converter design in Figure 1. The inputs and the outputs are depicted in Figure 2. Efficiencies of approximately 94% are realized. Transient load response is quite good with full recovery in approximately 3 milliseconds. The drive circuit shown in Figure 1 comprises three Texas Instruments TLC555 CMOS Timers. U1 serves as a 45 kHz oscillator. It, in turn, drives U2 and U3 which can be thought of as pulse width modulators (PWMs). This design assumes a well-regulated voltage input because of limited loop gain. The output voltage regulation is ±1% to ±3% over the full output load range with an input voltage delta of 300 mV. There is no current limit circuit included for a number of reasons, one of which is that the input is diode coupled to the output — output currents in excess of 15 A will exceed the diode current/wire bond ratings. Slow Start Circuit — If there were no constraint when start up occurs, the input current would become very high because the circuit would attempt to immediately restore the low output voltage. In order to manage this scenario, the PWM, which behaves, in effect, as an error amplifier, is prevented from overreacting and instead the duty cycle is controlled so that it rises slowly. As Vs comes up, it would normally pass through the 30 V zener diode D3 and adjustment potentiometer R8 to the junction – or duty cycle node – between Resistors R7 and R15. Instead the Soft Start node is connected directly to the output through D1 – C4 to Vs+ — thereby bypassing the output of the converter sensed by the R8 – D3 network until the Vs potential is reached. Thermal Overload Protection – Shown in Figure 3 is a circuit that could be added to temporarily remove output power from the SA306-IHZ via DIS2 if a thermal overload is detected at TEMP pin 25. An optional latch may be driven by the SA306-IHZ at TEMP pin 25 and its output could be used to shut down the converter via the DIS 1 pin 7, and/or shut down the 28 V supply in the event of a cooling failure. External current monitoring could also be gated to the same DIS1 pin 7 latch to protect the Boost Converter from load faults, etc. Overvoltage Protection — Overvoltage protection is set by Potentiometer R9 so that limiting begins when the output reaches 57 V. The DIS2 pin 23 is employed to shut down the S306-IHZ if a 1.7 V threshold at the pin is exceeded. Product information table: Mftrs. A Cycle-by-Cycle IC Motor Driver The new SA30-IHZ from the Cirrus Logic family of Apex Precision Power of motor drivers is a fully-integrated switching amplifier that employs cycle-by-cycle current limit which has been developed expressly to drive 3-phase brushless DC motors,. Three independent half bridges, with each comprising a P-FET and a N-FET, provide over 10 A of PEAK output current under digital control. Thermal and short circuit monitoring is provided, which generates fault signals for the microcontroller to take appropriate action. If one compares a brushless DC motor with the traditional brush DC motor, the former has a number of advantages. These include higher reliability and smaller size. However, there has been, until now, the issue of in-rush current which has persisted For instance, a 1 A continuous motor might require a driver amplifier that could deliver well over 10 A of PEAK current, in order to provide the initial inrush current that flows during startup. As a matter of fact, a low-inertia brushless motor can exhibit a peak-to-average ratio which is a much as 30:1! Therefore, until now, designers have had no option but to select a driver which could safely handle the large inrush current, or to create some form of current limit function in the drive circuitry design. Understanding Cycle-by-Cycle Limit As with many motor drive discussions, the concept of current limit in the context of a pulse width modulated (PWM) circuit is deceptively simple. In real time, current limit can measure the current in each motor phase or each drive leg and turn off the driver transistors when the current reaches some programmable threshold; followed by current decay in the motor for the rest of the PWM cycle; and finally, begin a new PWM cycle and repeat. Features & benefits: Greater Reliability and Smaller size Application information: 1st Pulse – During the 1st PWM pulse no current limit occurs because the pulse ends before the rising current reaches the 'Current Limit' threshold. At the end of the 1st pulse there is a short decay before the 2nd PWM pulse begins and the current resumes its rise. 2nd Pulse – During the 2nd PWM pulse the current reaches the 'Current Limit' value before the PWM input pulse ends. The PWM output pulse is shut off early in its cycle. Then the motor current decays until the third pulse is applied which once again causes the current to rise. Subsequent pulses – The behaviour described above continues until the motor rotation begins to generate sufficient back EMF so that the current no longer rises above the 'Current Limit' threshold. Notice that the rise and fall of the motor current waveforms is dependant on the resistance and inductance of the motor winding and are asynchronous with the PWM frequency. The CS4350 and CS4352 digital-to-analog converters (DAC) are complete stereo audio converters that offer a strong combination of audio performance and feature integration. They are based on an advanced multibit Delta Sigma architecture that provides the basis for their excellent dynamic range and improved out-of-band noise performance. The automatic sample-rate detection, which uses proprietary Cirrus Logic techniques, simplifies designs by automatically configuring the CS4350 and CS4352 into the appropriate operational mode. Further, Cirrus Logic’s patented PopGuard ™ technology serves to suppress clicks and pops often associated with power cycling. The CS4350 features an on-chip phase-locked-loop- (PLL) based master clock that supports 24-bit resolution and up to 216 kHz sampling rates and 108 dB dynamic range. Because of its on-chip PLL, the CS4350 is ideal for applications where an audio-related system clock is not present. By integrating the PLL, the CS4350 has eliminated the need for external master clock routing across the circuit board by locking to the incoming left-right clock signal, as opposed to the video clock or other high-speed clock sources, thus significantly reducing interference and clock-jitter sensitivity. This feature gives system designers a very high-performance DAC that also simplifies product designs. The CS4350 supports all standard PCM audio interface formats as well as the TDM interface, which enables daisy chaining of up to four CS4350s to receive 8-channels of digital audio on a single data stream. Single-ended or differential output architecture provides additional design flexibility. With its on-chip line-driver and analog low-pass filter, the CS4352 gives designers of mainstream consumer audio products the ability to eliminate external components, reduce design complexity and overall system costs. The on-chip line driver and analog low-pass filter directly drives a 2Vrms consumer line level audio output, eliminating the need for an operational amplifier and as many as 10 passive components within system designs. The integration and ability to directly drive the output of the end product greatly simplifies analog output stages and reduces costs. It is also pin-compatible with Cirrus Logic’s CS4351 DAC, ensuring an easy upgrade path.
