HARTING is now offering an extensive range of multipole connectors that can help reduce theme park maintenance costs for equipment installed in harsh outdoor environment conditions.

The robust characteristics of these connectors result from the use of alternative material finishes and mating protection seals, which lead to extended product lifetimes.

These features can also be particularly useful where ride, audio-visual and lighting control systems may be exposed to the cleaning fluids that are necessary to ensure a safe operating environment for the public.

HARTING’s comprehensive range of different hoods and housings offers IP65, IP67 and IP68/69K degrees of protection. Products are available that offer protection against ultraviolet radiation, ozone and salt spray, as well as connectors with different degrees of chemical resistance.

The IP 68/69K rated Han HPR connector has fully protected enclosed standard seals with an outdoor-rated surface finish and screw-mated coupling. The black outdoor-rated IP67 Han-Yellock® connectors use a similar enclosed protected seal design, but the mating is based on a user-friendly single-handed pushbutton system.

For an IP65 degree of protection, HARTING offers the black Han-M series die-cast aluminium or lightweight plastic Han-Eco hoods and housings, both available with outdoor UV resistant seals.

New design options for har-flex®︎ connectors

HARTING has introduced a number of new devices in its har-flex family of compact, versatile and rugged board-to-board and board-to-cable 1.27 mm pitch connectors.

Straight and angled connectors are now available as PCB models which, when combined with the connectors for flat ribbon connection, allow PCBs to be combined into complex systems perfectly adapted to their surroundings. All har-flex^® connectors are available with from six to 100 contacts, in increments of two. Fully assembled cables are also available.

The compact but rugged design of the har-flex^® connectors also guarantees reliable operation under adverse conditions. Two large holders ensure that the connectors are firmly held in place after soldering. A low-wear insertion and withdrawal procedure is achieved by a very smooth contact point between the male and female contacts.

These connectors are delivered in packaging compatible with production machines, and can be processed in the SMT solder process. In spite of the rugged design, har-flex® connectors are also suitable for high data rates, which means that they can handle modern transfer protocols such as Gigabit Ethernet or PCI Express.

HARTING ferrite-filter D-Subs represent a cost effective solution in applications where only high frequencies with small attenuations are required.

Ferrite-filter D-Subs provide a low level of filtering thanks to simple blocks of inductive ferrite attached to rear of the connectors.

Available in 9,15, 25, 37 pole solder cup and right angle PCB versions and also 9,15, 25, pole straight PCB versions, they are manufactured in accordance with IEC 60 807-2 (11/92 ) and IEC 60 512-25-2 (0302). PCB mount versions are a direct drop in replacement for standard D-Sub, utilizing the same footprint thus avoiding costly board redesign. Right angled versions are supplied with board locks to increase efficiency in the termination process.

Up until now, industrial Ethernet has only been able to reach the control level before it needs to switch to BUS systems via gateways. Single Pair Ethernet (SPE), delivered via HARTING’s T1 Industrial interface, allows equipment to connect via end-to-end IP-based communications right up into the field level.

Experts have suggested that SPE will be one of the key technologies that significantly shapes the success of the IIoT. The factory of the future will require high data streams and the industrial sector needs connectivity which adapts itself to increasingly growing demands. This is most effectively achieved via standards that are developed and advanced through partnerships in an open eco-system. The T1 Industrial supplies both data and power across a single pair of wires in an IEC 63171-6 industrial interface, bringing Ethernet from the cloud to every sensor and enabling Industry 4.0.

HARTING are founder members of the SPE Industrial Partner Network, an association of companies who are working together to promote Single Pair Ethernet technology. The aim is to offer an SPE ecosystem by pooling the knowledge of infrastructure providers and bringing people together on the device side. As a result, those keen to invest in SPE can rest assured solutions will work in combination because of the single standard, T1 Industrial-style connector face.

Innovative aspects of the T1 Industrial include the space-saving and weight reduction benefits attained by the move to a single pair of wires. This means the compact T1 can be easily incorporated into smaller devices. Furthermore, by reducing the amount of copper wiring required, the T1 delivers weight savings of 1.6 kg for every 100 metres of cable used. Also, Ethernet interfaces can now be designed onto simple sensors, cameras, reading/ID devices or similar miniaturised equipment.

In addition, the T1 mating face can be integrated into standard housing forms as required. As the product family expands there will be interfaces in M8 and M12 housings, as well as other designs. HARTING not only has connectors and other components in mind but a complete Single Pair Ethernet ecosystem which will deliver higher bandwidth and bigger loads, right down to the printed circuit board.

There is immense potential in this new technology. As sensors, actuators, and network nodes can be networked and supplied with power via the T1, there are numerous applications in automation technology, robotics, machinery, and plant manufacturing. Other potential uses being explored include traffic control, intelligent lighting, smart farming, and mobile machinery.

Within transportation, an Ethernet cable weighs approximately 4.6kg per 100 metres, whereas an SPE cable only 3kg. Over an average train carriage lifetime of 40 years, each kilogramme of saved weight delivers savings of around £12,300 per carriage. When you consider how many miles of cable are found in trains for entertainment, safety and control technologies, it soon becomes apparent that significant cost and weight savings are possible.

Furthermore, in industries such as robotics where the cables are subjected to strong torsional forces, the reduced number of wires means thinner and more flexible cables, which prolongs their service life.

Achieve substantial weight and time savings with the Han-Eco®︎ B

Ever since the Han® connector was first developed in the 1950’s, it has continued to set the worldwide standard for quality. From the start, the idea was to develop a connector that would be robust, easy to handle and suitable for a variety of applications. In the intervening years, the Han® range has expanded and developed, an ethos of continuous innovation that gives customers simple yet reliable solutions, even as markets and industries evolve.

For example, within production and manufacturing, using connectors in control panels has always been difficult, mainly because installation was complex and time-consuming. As companies now need to change the configuration of their connections quickly in order to offer the flexibility of modular manufacturing, a new way of working was required.

As a result, HARTING have developed the Han-Eco® B, a new series of hoods and housings available in a range of designs including bulkhead, surface mount and cable-to-cable, with sizes from 6B to 24B. They are manufactured from high-performance plastic, which provides IP65 protection, and are fully compatible with the standard metal Han® B housings, meaning it’s easy to combine new units with existing equipment. In addition, the hoods and housings are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, thanks to their resistance to environmental impacts.

The Han-Eco® B offers substantial time savings during the installation of control panels, thanks to the ability to rear mount inserts. Instead of installing cables through the bulkhead before assembling the contact inserts, the Han-Eco® B allows you to snap pre-assembled inserts into the housing from the rear. Not only does this simplify cabinet assembly, saving time and money, it also gives you the flexibility to separately pre-assemble the switch cabinet units and cable harnesses.

Rail transportation is another industry which can benefit from the innovations offered by these new polyamide connectors. Manufacturers are striving to minimise energy consumption in order to improve efficiencies, and reducing the weight of components is one way of delivering savings. By switching from metal connectors to Han-Eco® B, you can achieve substantial weight savings of up to 50%. These reductions may seem minimal compared to the weight of a train, but as connector usage in trains increases, so too does their proportion of the overall weight.

As well as being lighter, the Han-Eco® B supports modular inserts, meaning data, signal and power options can all be combined into one standard-sized industrial connector housing. This not only makes them flexible and versatile, it also reduces the space requirement for connectors within the train. Finally, the Han-Eco® B range also complies with standards IEC 61948 and EN 45545-2 and is fire-resistant according to UL94 V0.

NEW Connector for safe electrical grounding

New HARTING connector supports safe electrical grounding for portable equipment and temporary event installations

Han(R) GND from HARTING is a new connector series which offers an innovative solution for the safe grounding of electrical circuitry in portable units or for concerts and other events where equipment is erected on a temporary basis. For the first time, it allows full potential equalisation to be implemented in a pluggable design.

The robust IP 65 plastic housing single-pole connector is designed for stranded wires from 10 mm² to 35 mm² cross-section, and is available in both crimp and axial screw termination. The axial screw arrangement allows wires to be terminated to contacts without the need for special tooling.

Extra connector mating security can be provided by the use of additional locking elements that prevent unintentional interruption. Cable-to-cable hoods and gender changers allow a full system distribution cabling configuration to be assembled.

Han(R) GND can easily be integrated into temporary stage and truss constructions. An assembly with a pre-terminated crimp lug on the end of a length of cable and a Han(R) GND connector on the other end would be suitable for linking with standard fixtures and fittings such as ground spikes, rods or adjustable jubilee clips.

Applications for the Han(R) GND connector can be found right across the broadcast and entertainment market sector: for indoor or outdoor touring concert and festival electrical power distribution, theatre stage wings, portable lighting, audiovisual events, touring fairground rides and attractions, TV outside broadcast installations, sports events – in fact anywhere requiring rapid connections of ground leads on a temporary basis.
