HIROSE Electric has introduced the new FH50 series to meet with the requirement for highly reliable and robust flat flexible cable/flat printed circuit (FFC/FPC) connectors.

To allow user friendly operation, side-catchers are built into the internal structure of the housing wall. These locate and hold a tabbed FFC/FPC in place to allow a temporary holding facility to permit smooth and accurate guided positioning. The FFC/FPC can be inserted horizontally saving assembly time. The side-catchers also prevents incorrect FFC/FPC insertion by stopping the integral cam from rotating which blocks the actuator from closing.

The integral cams are situated in both sides of the housing walls. These rotate at the same time as the actuator operation to increase the retention force of the FFC/FPC to provide an overall stable and reliable connection.

Two-point spring beam contacts are utilized to reduce contact failure caused by contamination. The spring allows the contacts to move to increase contact reliability and resist vibration and shock. These contacts have a dual purpose and also provide a reliable hinge point in four different areas to support the rotating actuator instead of relying on the housing walls.

Solder wicking is prevented by a special nickel barrier that is applied to the contacts.

Hirose has introduced the new FH48 series to meet with the demand for flat flexible cable (FFC) connectors with higher transmission speed. The connector fully supports next generation chip V-by-One® HS by THine digital signalling standard.

The high-speed transmission capability is achieved by the innovatively designed impedance-controlled contacts. (Differential impedance: 100 Ω ± 10%). These can accept an impedance-matched shielded FFC with ground contacts. Furthermore, this same FFC can be used on the popular FH41 series which is the horizontal version to allow greater design flexibility.

The user-friendly actuator is flipped up automatically by the insertion of the FFC even when the actuator is in the closed position to allow quick assembly. A firm and clear tactile click from the actuator confirms that correct locking of the FFC into the connector has been completed. Side catches are present in the internal structure of the connector to locate and hold a tabbed FFC in place which allows a temporary holding facility to allow accurate guided positioning. Furthermore, this increases the retention force of the FFC to the connector providing an overall stable and reliable connection. The retention force is 40N (upward direction, 50 position).

The housing incorporates an innovative robust lock structure. The contacts form a reliable hinge point for the rotating actuator instead of relying on the housing walls. This allows the actuator to be supported across the whole length of the connector which guarantees superior performance and reliable connection. In addition, special metal plates are present to support the rotating actuator from the back.

Solder wicking is prevented by the special nickel barrier that is applied to the contacts. Wide gaps are present between the contacts and housing to absorb excess flux and solder.

Hirose have introduced the EF1 series to meet the requirement for smaller yet higher performing power connectors for industrial applications.

The EF1 series consists of a DIN rail mount type in-line receptacle and plug and a panel mount type in-line receptacle and plug which both accept high power crimp contacts with the capacity to handle up to 130A (amps) current rating.

The innovative connector design allows the crimped cable to be inserted into the connector housing in a quick and user-friendly one-step operation. The crimp contact can be easily terminated to the cable with use of a standard market commodity JIS C 9711 hand tool.

The snap-in lock provides a positive tactile sensation to confirm correct mating engagement and secure connection. The unique shape of the internal spring contact and contact points allows the optimum contact force to maintain a highly reliable stable connection.

The housing features four different mating keying styles to prevent incorrect mating when multiple connectors are used. The connectors are available in a red colour to define the plus or minus connection.

Hirose have introduced the DF62W Series for applications needing in-line wire to wire connections inside small and narrow spaces.

The connector housings are low profile. The mated dimensions of the plug and socket are only 27.1mm in length. The connector outline is contoured to prevent the connector from being trapped in small areas during the wiring process.

The water resistant structure is simplified to ensure that the cable assembly process is fast and user friendly. The water resistant seals are pre-assembled to allow the crimped wire to be inserted directly into the housing without additional tooling.

Highly reliable barrel crimp contacts are utilised to provide strong resistance against rough operation and vibration. The box shape contact head of the female contact works as a mating guide to align the male contact, enabling smooth mating and the prevention of contact buckling. Furthermore, the crimp contacts are designed to fit into the housing tightly to restrain against contact fretting.

The positive lock guarantees secure locking and gives a clear tactile sensation and an audible click to confirm correct engagement. The visible lock structure has a slot to allow a visual check of complete mating.

Non-water resistant versions known as the DF62B, DF62C & DF62P series are also available.

Hirose would like to announce the new DF59M/S/SN series. It is primarily dedicated for the LED lighting market but also for other applications where ultra small connectors are required.

The multifunctional connector is applicable for wire-to-board power supply connections and board-to-board coplanar connections.

The board-to-board option consists of a joining plug and a board mounted receptacle. A slim profile plug (DF59S) or a ultra slim profile plug (DF59SN) are available. The receptacle is not moulded to significantly reduce the depth profile to minimise board space. The low mated height profile is only 1.18mm (DF59S) and 1.2mm (DF59SN). The receptacle is common for both plug types and features a friction lock that provides a positive tactile sensation and an audible click when mated. This confirms the connector is fully engaged guaranteeing complete electrical and mechanical connection.

An additional feature of the board-to-board version is a unique 3-Axis floating structure. This permits movement of + 0.5mm in X and Y directions, and + 0.2mm in Z direction to compensate for any tolerances during the mating process. Special innovative, robust, stress free contacts protects the contact area from any mechanical stress during the floating process.

The DF59M wire-to-board version consists of a crimp plug and receptacle. The DF59M receptacle has a different design to the DF59S/SN receptacle, however the PCB layout has a double footprint so that both receptacles can be mounted on to the same PCB pattern. The crimp plug features an enhanced 3-point contact with a spring feature to ensure high contact reliability. The positive lock feature provides 16N (Newton’s) of lock retention force to ensure a secure connection that is confirmed by an audible tactile click to ensure correct engagement. A higher current rating of up to 6A* (Amp) can be applied to the DF59M wire-to-board version.

The FX23 series has been introduced to meet the requirement for floating connectors that can handle high current ratings and high speed transmission.

The connector range consists of headers and receptacles that allow a parallel or right angle board-to-board connection.

The header has a unique floating structure embedded inside the fixed base of the housing. This allows an alignment movement in XY directions of +/- 0.6mm minimum (max) to absorb mounting misalignment, vibration and dimensional errors when mated.

High speed transmission of up to 6 Gbps (max) is supported by the innovative contact design to ensure impedance matching. The ground contacts are situated between the adjacent differential pair contacts to reduce crosstalk for better performance.

The connector has a hybrid structure featuring power and signal contacts. Four built-in power contacts that can carry up to 3A (Amps) current rating each are located along the mating guides to save space. The signal contacts can carry 0.5A each.

By using a PCB thickness of 1.6mm the top and bottom sides of a PCB can be utilised to mount the FX23 series. This is due to the design of the single metal post that does not protrude out to the other side of the PCB allowing space saving. For the metal posts the pin-in-hole soldering is applicable.

Ideal applications are industrial equipment, broadcast equipment, POS terminals, medical devices, BTS, servo motors, PLC and car navigation equipment.

The connector range features a low profile, panel mount system rack side connector with male contacts and a cable mount battery module side connector with female contacts suitable for 1U racks.

The system rack connector body has a floating structure. Each side of the connector body has indentations that can accept a floating screw. The clearance between the floating screw and panel absorb panel mounting misalignment in X and Y directions up to + 2mm to facilitate easy plug in.

The battery module side connector incorporates unique female bellows style contacts to fully engage with

the male power blade mating contacts on the system rack side connector. This guarantees complete and

highly reliable electrical and mechanical connection. The high current handling capacity is 150A (amps)

maximum per contact.

Safety is assured with the finger protection design that complies with IP2X on the battery module side connector. This has been evaluated using a IEC 60950 test finger to ensure the contacts can not be touched.

Hirose have introduced the DF64 series connector system to meet the requirement for small connectors for the LED lighting market and power supply applications.

The multifunctional connector is applicable for board-to-wire power supply connections and board-to-board ‘bridge’ connections. Only one type of receptacle is needed, irrespective of whether the cable plug or board mount plug is used, allowing a reduction in the number of components needed.

The connection system can be applied with 5A (amps) maximum current rating when using AWG18 cable size. The creepage distance is a minimum of 3.2mm between the contacts allowing a 350V voltage rating to be applied.

The board-to-wire connector utilises a unique stress free, side locking structure that is a user friendly, innovative, locking mechanism that allows a higher cable pull retention force. The lock provides a consistent and positive tactile click, this ensures the connector is fully engaged guaranteeing complete electrical and mechanical connection. In the mated condition, the contacts touch together in two different areas providing high contact reliability.

The connectors feature an innovative back-flip actuator which is situated at the back of the housing instead of the front allowing it to be in the open position when delivered to reduce cable assembly time. The actuator is securely held in place by unique contacts that support the axle during rotation to absorb contact force to guarantee good mechanical connection and ensure long term reliability. A tactile sensation confirms correct locking. In addition, the housing entry is tapered to ensure smooth insertion of the FFC/FPC.

Space is saved on the board due to the compact design. The short mounting depth of 3.2mm is one of the shortest in the world for a back-flip connector. The height profile is low, only 1mm above the board. In addition,

the fully enclosed moulded housing ensures contacts are not exposed on the connector underside, which frees even more space for board designers to run conductive traces underneath the connector.

The receptacle is unmolded to significantly reduce the depth profile of the connector to make it ultra slim to minimise board space. The low mated height profile is only 1.18mm.

The DF59S features a unique 3-Axis floating structure. This permits movement of + 0.5mm in X and Y directions, and + 0.2mm in Z direction allowing design flexibility during the installation when multiple boards are used. Special innovative, robust, stress free contacts protects the contact area from any mechanical stress during the floating process.

The joint plug’s contacts are fully recessed into the housing insulator to prevent short circuits. The receptacle features a friction lock that provides a positive tactile sensation and an audible click when mated. This confirms the connector is fully engaged guaranteeing complete electrical and mechanical connection.

Although compact in size, DF59S can accept a high current rating of 3A. The creepage distance of 3.05mm complies with IEC60664-1 when 250V voltage rating is applied. A total voltage rating of 350V maximum can be applied when the distance between two sets of connectors is 3mm, 250V can be applied at a distance of 2mm and 200V at 1.5mm.

A wire-to-board and short-circuit plug version, designed to mate with the existing receptacle, are under development to offer a complete multifunctional 3-way system in the future.

Hirose have introduced the PS2 series to meet with the demand for high performing industrial interface connectors with high current capacity for storage batteries.

The PS2 connector range consists of panel mount plugs for the battery module side and panel mount receptacles for the system rack side.

The PS2 features signal contacts with a current rating of up to 5A and power contacts of up to 300A. The signal contacts are crimp style which are easily inserted into a separate crimp housing which is then inserted into the main connector body. The power contacts are easily connected to the cables using a standard crimp contact and standard (M8) screw. Alternatively the power contacts can be connected to a BUS bar.

The power contact structure features multiple springs in a crown shape to decrease contact resistance and achieve high current capability. Furthermore the impact of vibration is reduced and reliability is guaranteed in harsh industrial environments.

A sequential mating structure is utilised to ensure correct mating of the connector. The longer signal contacts make the first mating contact, followed by the power contacts and finally the standard signal contacts to

complete the mating process and ensure safety.

The connector body has a unique floating structure. Each side of the connector body has indentations that can accept a floating screw. The clearance between the floating screw and panel absorb panel mounting

misalignment in X and Y directions up to + 2.5mm.

Ideal applications are storage battery applications where maintenance efficiency is needed.

The FX20 series has been introduced to meet the demand for floating connectors that can absorb mounting misalignment in applications where multiple stacking connectors are used.

The header connector has a unique floating structure embedded inside the fixed base of the housing. This allows alignment movement in XY directions of + 0.6mm minimum to

absorb mounting misalignment, vibration and dimensional errors. Large mating guides are present on each side of the connector to allow easy mating and self alignment movement of + 1.2mm in XY directions. These also prevent reverse insertion.

The receptacle features highly reliable double beam contacts. Each contact beam has a different vibration characteristic due to different contact forces that widens the frequency range to avoid resonance. This allows high vibration resistance and increased contact reliability. Furthermore the first beam contact has a self-cleaning function which eliminates dust from the contact path of the second beam contact. Despite the fine pitch of 0.5mm, each contact has the current handling capacity of 0.5A.

The contact area is protected from solder wicking and penetration of flux due to the clearance between the contact and housing to prevent capillary action. The PCB layout design allows PCB patterning underneath the connector for design flexibility.

Hirose’s popular FX18 high speed, board to board connector series shares the same stack height variants as FX20, therefore both can be combined on the same PCB to offer a high speed and high current capability.

Ideal applications are industrial equipment, broadcast equipment, smart meters, medical devices, BTS, measuring instruments and projectors.

Hirose has an established reputation in the industry for manufacturing high quality, innovative connectors. Recognising the rapid and changing

technological developments in the field of electronics, Hirose have

introduced the FH42 series to meet with the demand for miniaturisation.

The FH42 series has been designed with space saving in mind. The short

mounting depth is only 3.08mm which is one of the world’s smallest mounting depths for a Back-Flip connector. The low height profile is a mere 0.65mm.

Although compact in size the connector is easy to mount on the PCB with double sided contacts. The fully enclosed molded housing structure conceals the exposure of contacts on the bottom face of the connector allowing

conductive traces to run underneath the connector. Solder wicking is prevented by the application of a nickel barrier on the contacts to prevent the travel of solder into the mating contact area.

The insertion of the FPC is user friendly due to the presence of the wide housing entry and tapered contacts that allow the FPC to be inserted from a steeper upright angle, this allows other components to be placed closer to the connector entrance. In addition, it is also possible to insert the FPC horizontally due to the innovative side-catches that have been designed with a curved surface to permit correct positioning of the FPC. When the FPC travels over the side-catches an audible and tactile click confirms correct mating. For additional security, a special cut out in the housing allows a visual check to verify the FPC is positioned correctly. A high FPC retention force of 7.25N

(31 position, horizontal direction) is achieved due to the inclusion of metal fittings situated internally on each side of the housing to hold the FPC tabs firmly in place.

The unique shape of the contacts support FPC retention by applying pressure on to the FPC to further increase the retention. In addition, the contacts fully support the Back-Flip actuator axle during rotation making it more

secure and exceptionally durable.

Ideal applications are LCD displays, digital cameras, PDA’s, POS terminals and many other small

portable devices.

The FH43B series has been designed with space saving in mind. The short mounting depth is a mere 2.75mm and has a low profile height of only 0.9mm allowing maximum space to be utilised on the PCB. The connector is lightweight and is easy to mount on to the PCB with double sided contacts. The fully enclosed molded housing structure conceals the exposure of contacts on the bottom face of the connector allowing conductive traces to run underneath the connector. Solder wicking is prevented by the application of a nickel barrier on the contacts to prevent the travel of solder into the

mating contact area.

The insertion of the FPC is user friendly due to the presence of innovative side-catches present in the internal structure of the connector to locate and hold a tabbed FPC in place which provides a temporary holding facility to allow accurate guided positioning. Furthermore, this increases the retention force of the FPC to the connector providing an overall stable and reliable connection. A firm and clear tactile click confirms that correct locking of the FPC into the connector has been completed.

The unique shape of the contacts fully support the actuator axle during rotation due to the tip of each contact

hooking down onto the actuator from above. Metal fittings are provided on each side of the connector to support the actuator from below making it even more secure and exceptionally reliable.

DF60 Series, 10.16mm Pitch, High Current, Board to Wire Connector

Hirose have introduced the DF60 series to meet with the increased demand for high powered wire to board connectors offering advanced reliability for industrial equipment.

The connector range consists of cable mount plugs and PCB mounted vertical receptacles that have the capacity to handle up to 40A current rating. Right angle and in-line versions are under development.

The overall size of the DF60 series has been designed with space saving in mind, the plug and receptacle housing are low profile with a mated height of only 30mm. The footprint dimensions are minimised by the small pitch size of 10.16mm.

The robust lock provides a positive tactile sensation and an audible click when mated. This confirms the connector is fully engaged guaranteeing complete electrical and mechanical connection. The lock is on the centre of the housing to avoid uneven locking and cable entanglement which is common with side locks. Furthermore multiple connectors can be mounted closer together side by side.

The plug utilises crimp contacts that have a unique 5-point contact internal structure. Two of the contact points are fixed in the upper section. The other three are in the lower section and are spring based allowing movement to follow the flat structure of the male contact during the mating operation. This provides high contact reliability, secure connection and strong resistance against vibration.

Keying variations are available to prevent mis-insertion of multiple connectors.

EV1 Series, High Current, Waterproof Connectors for Power Supplies

Hirose have introduced the EV1 series to meet with the increased demand for waterproof, high powered connectors offering advanced reliability for industrial equipment. The connector range consists of panel mounted plugs and receptacles that have the capacity to handle up to 180A current rating.

The overall size of the EV1 series has been designed with space saving in mind, the plug shell and receptacle housing are low profile. The panel flange on each connector features an innovative staggered design to save space on the panel. The connectors are securely fixed to the panel with M6 bolts.

The connector plug accepts cables with a conductor size of 20mm² - 26.6mm². The cables are terminated to unique power crimp contacts which are quick and easy to terminate using standard JIS crimping tools. The power crimp contacts have a plastic tip to provide finger protection for safety (Test finger IEC 60601).

The receptacle can accept a 3mm thick BUS bar connection which is secured with standard M6 bolts. Cable can also be used which is terminated to the connector using a standard crimp contact and washer. The receptacle features unique contacts with crown shaped multiple contact points to decrease contact resistance and to resist against vibration. A plastic cover surrounds the rim of the contact to provide finger protection for safety.

(Test finger IEC 60601).

The waterproof structure of the connector is IP68/IPX9K compliant. This is achieved through strategically placed oil and weatherproof gaskets to prevent any water intrusion. An excellent shielding structure is provided through the secure connection of the cable, shell and panel for EMI prevention.

DF62 Series, Slim In-line, Wire to Wire Connectors

Hirose have introduced the DF62 Series for applications needing wire to wire connections inside small and narrow spaces.

The connector housings are low profile. The mated dimensions of the plug and socket are only 18.6mm length and the height and width are under 10mm. The connector outline is contoured to prevent it from being trapped in a small area during the wiring process.

Secure locking of the connector is guaranteed. The positive lock gives a clear tactile sensation and an audible click to confirm correct engagement. The lock strength is an impressive 50N despite its small size. The visible lock structure has a slot to allow a visual check of complete mating.

Highly reliable crimp contacts are utilised to provide strong resistance against rough operation and vibration. The box shape contact head of the female contact works as a mating guide to align the male contact, enabling smooth mating and the prevention of contact buckling. Furthermore the crimp contact has two special contact points that protrude slightly to follow the surface of the male contact during the mating process giving a more durable connection. The lance area of the crimp contact is reinforced to prevent the cable being pulled out. The lance strength is 25N/pin using AWG28 cable.
