Great review and walkthrough!
I'm testing the Genuino 101 out right now and noticing some of the same challenges. Definitely some issues out of the box but generally fun and useful.

An interesting introduction to the Genuino 101 but it would also have been useful to have more information about using the the built in sensors and the ARC core. There was also another feature built into the Curie module that got no mention, but then I don't think I have seen it mentioned in most of the 101 reviews and that is the embedded neural network processor from General Vision. An additional API is available from General Vision to take advantage of the neural processor, but again is not widely publicised (and no, I don't have any connection with General Vision other than a growing interest in artificial intelligence).

It's great that they have retained backwards compatibility, along with the 5v tolerance.

I've had issues with the Com port on later versions of Windows, and found it easier to go into devices and then tell it that its a serial port.

I also see it registered as Com55 and I wonder if that played a part in the hanging issues.

I might need to add one of these into the collection ... they look rather useful.

Nice post.

I am getting impressed with the INTEL moves into the embedded market place.

The support for the Edison board is very nice and it looks like this board supports the Arduino support boards as well.
