bare metal C on SAMA5D4 Xplained Ultra with Jlink, which IDE?

After running Linux on my SAMA5D4 Xplained Ultra board, I thought I'd put the JTAG to use and explore writing and debugging bare metal C on it.

Ok, repgramming the EDBG for Jlink OB was easy..., using a fav IDE seems major headache :

- uVision 5 appears to not supprt SAMA5 (then again, it's poor SW anyway)

- Microchip "Studio" has no supprt either? What?

- Segger Embedded Studio (my fav CrossWorks spawn) talks with the Jlink EDBG fine but gives insane cryptic errors when I try to build a Cortex A5 target, this is nuts.

Further, SEB doesn't seem to properly support SAMA5 either?

Is there a more sane way to do this?

PS : I detest Eclipse

Thanks Shabaz for taking the trouble in reviewing and replying. Sorry for the delay, I got no notification at all.
Normally I wouldn't be too worried about it as I'm not much into "ROMless". But I bought the SAMA5D4 xplained really cheap during Ele 14's "firesale"
and wanted to do something funky with it.... But I agree, it might be too ambitous in setting up resources.... :-) Sill would be fun to be tenacious for a change :-)

From what I can tell, it's an applications processor, so it's unusual to run applications bare metal. That being said, you could write bare metal for it, and build with GCC, either cross-compiled (a bit awkward to set up initially, but there will be guides on it, just not specifically for that processor), or even natively, i.e. compile on itself, which is often the far easier approach at least for quick experiments. Developers would normally use tools like Visual Studio Code (VS Code), and that can kick off the build process (may take some configuration), or the build can be done from the command line.

I would say, when it comes to bare metal coding, it may well be quite an uphill task to set up the processor (quite detailed examination of the datasheet would be needed, to study what registers initially need to be configured, which of course usually isn't needed, since that would be part of the boot process for the OS, if it were not a bare-metal project).

Hello is it part number DM240001DM240001 There is still a product page on Microchip website, scroll down to Documentation & Software section.

Did the CD contain anything special (non-free licence, etc.)? Otherwise all up-to-date software can be downloaded from Microchip website.

Until now, I could only purchase low quantities through Mouser / Digikey, where I have to pay extra duties, and ordering is more cumbersome due to the organization of our purchase department. Can someone please help me with this code. I'm trying to get the dsPIC33FJ256GP710 (Explore 16) to run at 40Mhz. This is part of the code I've found but it gets stuck at the line "while (OSCCONbits.COSC != 0b011); // Wait for Clock switch to occur". ie it's not switching. It did give me a warning saying something about cycling power before starting, but me no comprendo.

Hi ! Sam,

Just a note regarding "cycling power before starting" it may mean removing power and re-powering for a new start of the application in order to make it work as it should in some cases.

Hi Mike,

We are using SUB2512 in our project. But this is not working as intended.

Please see the attached schematics

Our application requires, Self powered hub with removable ports.Upstream port is always attached.

With the above schematics, we are not getting any clocks from the crystal.

No voltage is available on PLLFILT pin.

I explain wrong the problem,I apologize.

The GUI is the problem,won't start,the GUI should start even the Pickit is not connected to PC.I suspect Visual C++ library or NetFramework.

Hi,

If your Pickit2 is detected as HID device it means from PC side it is OK.

The error message you see can be due to lots of different reasons but the number one is that there is some issue on your hardware side.

1/ wrong ICSP connections

2/ wrong PIC reference selected

3/ incorrect reset circuitry

4/ damaged ICSP on pickit2

5/ unsupported PIC

Best is to test the same hardware on another machine to make sure board + pickit2 are fine.

Using some tools like USBdeview you can remove the Pickit2 driver and plug it back so that it reinstalls

Which SW do you use ?

Pickit2 is a very old tool which has been released to open source community. It does not support lots of recent PICs. You may want to consider to buy the successor Pickit3 which supports are PICs ;=)

Hi,my pickit2 crash when I try to start him,my OS is W7 and the pickit2 it works fine about couple years until now.I check the pickit2 with the same windows installed on another hdd and works fine,so pickit2 its ok,I guess is something wrong with detection or what,in Device Manager appears HID when I connect the pickit2 to USB.The error that i received from windows is "Pickit2 has stopped working".
