Nothing beats a tool that has a mechanism to apply the correct amount of force to secure a connector. I always dread using my spade lug tool. It is the force from compressing your hand that pinches the connector. I really need to replace the beast.

Thanks for the interesting write up on these higher current connectors. While I do not have any application for them I find it fascinating to learn about the physics and problems encountered dealing with the higher currents.

I hear the view of Victoria Falls is awesome.

I am surprised that you had internet service all through your trip. I knew they were trying to get coverage in most of the African countries, but I had not heard how well they were doing in actually providing service.

I appreciate the effort to make the car journey more enjoyable, but I am greatly concerned about making the drive too enjoyable to the point where the driver loses track of his primary job, driving the car.

I also appreciate a common connector approach so that you do not need to duplicate your gadgets in multiple locations.

I just hope that drivers use their gadgets wisely while behind the wheel. We kill enough people on the roads as it is. We do not need to increase the distractions that can cause more.

I agree that LED's are much better than CFL's, but if you want to go to the real money saver, we should build lights powered by radioactive waste material.

About thirty years ago, I worked with some physicists and engineers and we found that you could take a small amount of low level radioactive material, enclose it in leaded glass with some neon gas and phosphorous for a zero power light. They would be perfect for any area where lighting is needed 24/7 and have a life expectancy of centuries/millenia.

It also solves to problem of storage. The amount in each bulb is very small that there is almost no risk of contamination from a broken bulb.

The lights would be distributed over a huge area, thus keeping the radiation hazard to a minimum.

So if you want to kill two birds with one stone, lets do it right and reuse the energy sources at hand.

I agree with your points, but those of us with large hands and fingers find many of these tiny connectors to be very inconvenient to work with. Some times I think the manufacturers need to consider some basic human factors in designing connectors.

Hi Doug,

Good post, but I must point out that it has always been a "needed it yesturday" world in engineering. I think the main difference is that in the past we knew the limits of the technology and bounded our expectations. As you point out, with today's ready connection with high speed devices, the expectations have advanced to follow the technology.
