I just discovered the Moto mod developer kit recently I have an idea on a mod that I think would be really handy

My idea is to create a mod with multiple bluetooth transmitters and possibly a few Bluetooth receivers problem I have had is simply having a bunch of bluetooth enabled speakers whether they be part of a light bulb or standalone even on the new Bluetooth standard you can only connect to two devices sun containers. I would like to be able to route the audio out on the Motorola Z4 and find a way to keep all of the Bluetooth transmitters synced so that cheaply I can have a whole house music system it probably would be a plus to even have a way to connect to several Wi-Fi speakers as well I could yeah they're stream music or go on YouTube and play a song I like and from within the app created for this particular mod I could put a check mark beside all of the speakers I want to use it would be great if I could just open up a music channel on my fire stick or my Roku device or even just watch a regular movie on Netflix and in that case pair my phone in a way that it receives what's being transmitted from the fire stick if that's too difficult I could purchase a standalone Bluetooth transmitter that I can hook up to the audio out on my television or sound system or whatever device I'm wanting to use maybe I might want to use my Amazon echo device and be able to pair the echo device as the sender so that it can interface with my app and then route everything coming in to see Bluetooth transmitters that go to individual speakers to make it really really interesting each Bluetooth device that is part of the mod could be set up as either a transmitter or a receiver so that for example I could have a Bluetooth microphone that is coming into the phone and then transmitting out to all of the speakers I select I'm saying speakers that's assuming the Bluetooth transmitters are going to actual speakers. Initially I would like it to be set up specifically for sound and music I got very frustrated and when I went out several years ago and bought four Bluetooth speakers just to find out that I could only connect to one of them at a time on my phone I found an app that allows you to use other cell phones as a means to transmit wirelessly music to all of the phones that are connected and then you can either come out of the headphone jack on that phone or use that phone's Bluetooth to connect to a speaker the app gets out of sync one nifty feature is that you can advance or retard the music feed exiting out of each Bluetooth device so that you can manually get everything in sync I'm not very good at software I'm pretty sure just building something very similar that's not even part of a mod I could do with very little effort. Maybe after all the bugs are worked out each individual phone that happens to be in my home could also be paired too my Bluetooth router mod so that whatever I am outputting could also be output to another person's phone. Then maybe advancements can be made within that app or other apps can be developed to work with the bluetooth/ WiFi wireless mod so that if you wanted to partially do away with OTG cables or use OTG cables to enhance my next idea. Example could be having a Bluetooth keyboard a Bluetooth mouse Bluetooth memory stick and for example an old tablet. I could use the mod to basically have and ad hoc PC or Android device or I could use keyboard mouse and flash drive to control the same phone that the mod is connected to. I know there are variations of many of the things I have stated but nothing I have found that gives the control I am imagining. Last part probably a little bit beyond my skill set however I mentioned Wi-Fi to be able to send a Wi-Fi signal to the mod such as a Wi-Fi light switch on the wall and be able to reroute it through a Bluetooth transmitter and vice versa could make serious dent in the smart home automation category especially for people who thinks hitting a button is more convenient than having to speak out the commands. I guess we could call it a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi input output routing app with mod any ideas or if anyone knows something similar is already in development or already exist let me know

SPI return result issue

Hello Everyone,

I hope someone can help and answer a few questions I have in-regards to SPI protocol and the MDK. Currently I have 2 x MDK, 2 x PiHats, and a few perf boards. I have tried on multiple MDKs, a PiHat, and a perf board with all the same results. I am trying to interface over SPI with a HopeRF RFM95 Sub-Ghz LoRa module (https://www.hoperf.com/modules/lora/RFM95.html). Currently I have it wired up with the table below.

The issue I am having is the return results from SPI_SEND(), judging from the block comment it returns the value of what should be stored in the registry.

My issue is the return results when my readu8 and writeu8 functions are called is 0x00. I have tracked down where the spi_send() function is called for the stm32 cortex board and copied the spivdbg line changing the function to dbg() to receive output to the ramlog of nsh console.

The return results in the spi_send function are correct but when they are passed to the SPI_SEND() macro they seem to just produce 0x00. I have provided my rfm95_readu8() function below.

From my understand with SPI and to access the registry values is first we send over the registry address, and we call SPI_SEND again to pull the results of such address. Bellow is a screenshot of the nsh /dev/ramlog

As we can see where spi_send it returns the correct Sent and Return values. But when the return value for uint8_t regval = SPI_SEND(); the result for the regval is 0x00. I have also attached the lines up to my saleae pro 16 analyzer.

It would seem judging from the data table on the right the bytes being sent over are correct and the return results should be correct. This makes me believe my code is wrong some how inside my function where I am not getting the correct return value. The HopeRF RFM95 is an MSB, and full-duplex CPOL = 0 and CPHA = 0. This is coming from the datasheet, which I have set when configuring the spi device.

If anyone has any insight on what my issue is please let me know thanks.

Hi everyone. Long time since I'm waiting to start my moto mod project. Anyone here knows where can I find the raspberry pi Hat adapter? Searched in a lot of places, even used ones in ebay and I can't find nothing. I live in Brazil and if you heard any news about us, you probably know our president will got us killed we are heaving some political issues. So before I go mad, I will focus in something productive.

Since I first saw the Hasselblad mod I got mysel wondering if something like the Sony QX-1 camera wouldn't make more sense. I used to work with photo edition for a studio. Cameras are usually heavy and bulky, with some exceptions. But the hability for changing your lenses are superb. Since I dropped the computer engineering school in the early years, I'm not really good designing boards. But a few weeks ago, I "discovered" the new Raspberry Pi HQ camera and Oh boy, that got my attention. It might be ingenuity of mine, but I would really love to use that in a smartphone. Actually, I would prefer adding a full frame sensor and old threaded mount lenses, since they are worldwide available and as cheap as it can be. That said, I bought an used, screen broken Moto Z. Who knows when I will be able to work on anything outdoor again? At least I got myself a lot of things to do to make it working, since I will do all the fixing at home. Last time I did something like this, it was a Nexus 5 (everything changed since then). Later in the days when moto Z was the last great thing, I did a lot of drawings about how an interchangeable lens mod should fit and look in the real world. But I got so many homes since then I probably lost all of them. Will make some more If someone here is able to give me a hand, I would really apreciate.

Oh, And this text is much more fun if you read it as if it was Deadpool talking. Just saying.

I have an old XOOM MZ600 3G Verizon CDMA (Stingray) tablet that came loaded with Android 3.0. I'd really like to update this to the latest 4.1.2 that Verizon put out OTA several years ago, but that's been impossible to find. I also severely doubt I will receive it OTA in the year 2020. Does anyone have a copy of the img file I can flash to my tablet?

friends good afternoon, I have seen the forum and I am in love with diy development, I live in Brazil and here unfortunately the imposts put out of reach the purchase of mods to have idea a mod aki comes close to almost $ 400 for taxes is very difficult, I have an incipio power pack that stopped working, as a very curious person I decided to open it, and I saw that it has a battery soldered in two terminals +/- my doubt is can I replace this battery with another from another cell phone and have my mod again? thank you very much for your help and willingness to help.

Lapdock mod needed

A mod that is hopefully easy to make that I need is a simple mod to allow a z to dock to a Motorola (attic) lapdock. This dock was originally for the Motorola Atrix and available through AT&T. At the time the Android OS was not capable of using it and a "separate" OS (pre-chromebook) was what you used while docked. With advancements in Android this lapdock would be a HUGE hit with no changes required.

A newer lapdock could later be released with an updated screen, battery, sound, usb3, etc and would also be a huge hit and finally wipeout any remaining distinction between phones and desktop/laptop computers once and for all.

I have 2 lapdocks and 17+ years Linux experience. I'm also a descent maker. I'm just not a developer.

Anyone interested in created this mod with me?

Is there an available way to interface directly with the pins on the back of one of the z phones, bypassing the moto mods altogether? Is there a pinout and a communication protocol available?

I dont know if there is already a thread about my lingering thought so i hope you all could still bear with my inability to use the search function properly Therefore i apologize in advance

since the dawn of time....well at least for me ...i hated and still hate that ongoing trend with buliding a smartphone that has a non removable battery. Of course in the end i realize that with modern batterys which you can shape in any form whatsoever it is more efficient to let the battery always be integral. Not to speak about that with being waterproof it would be not so easy if the battery should be removable. But since the release of moto mods and the motorola z3 play i have a funny thought on my mind and it is literally killing me because i couldnt find anything about it via internet search and it feels like it wouldnt be to difficult or even is already possible to realize my thought. So i would be really thankfull if you could help me out with this one

Soooo finally getting to my question . There are battery mods for the z play smortphones which you can easily clap on your motorola and easily remove again if you want to. With this method the mod only really function as a charger for your non-removable battery and with that gives your smartphone more juice for the day. BUT isnt it possible to programm and make a mod like that but with the intention of not being a charger for the non-removable battery but being the main battery altogether ? That way instead of powering up the battery which powers up and runs the smartphone that mod would directly be the powersource for the smartphone. But this time not on the inside the smartphone but on the outside dividing the Smartphone into two easily separable units but by claping them together again making a fully usable and powered up Smartphone. Isnt that possible to do ? That would be so awesome if it is possible. just think about it. You could easily change your main battery without poking up your smartphone just by removing the mod. You would retain the waterproofing on both battery and main smartphone. And the best thing about it because the main power is the Mod itself the other main smartphone unit wouldnt need a charge port for the battery making more room for other possible parts being build in and also with the non-removable battery out of the main smartphone unit making even more room which could be used otherwise. For me that would be a dream come true. I would get my removable battery feature without someone else loosing features like being waterproff and so on. Just thinking about it makes me giggle .

So my dear community i would really appreciate your thoughts on that matter . Isnt it possible to do so ? Or is it really too difficult to make it work ?.

I was quite disappointed to discover that my new Moto Z3 doesn't have an IR blaster to control my TVs and DVD player. But then I thought: wait! How hard could it be to make a Mod for that? A thing that comes standard on a lot of other phones on the market!

First of all let me say Hello to everyone , and thank the community for allowing the ability to tinker with MDK and share thoughts on potential concepts .

I have a couple of ideas I've been playing with , one of which being : why isn't there a talk of a audio DAC moto mod option ? Looking at the pin layouts there is usb bus and I believe android naitvely supports usb audio adapters. I tried used the Asus u3 sonar usb soundcard with an moto g5s over OTG and it worked , however without software to adjust the audio the sound was terrible . The market for it is niche , but would definitely stand out . Maybe even team up with Teenage Engineering and make something with the "pocket operator" family name , make a fun little platform/device.

My background is network IT , and one thing that I would love love love to see is a moto mod with a LAN port (or 2) and some form of wed-admin with an array of network related tools - maybe even some Cisco integration. I know I know , the marketing for this fictional device is even more niche , but I would love to pay for this even if I had to pay for the Meraki or Fingbox integration . For those familiar with raspi look up "GeeekPI Enc28j60" which uses SPI bus to get the ethernet talking (slow , yes , but it works) and webmin as a form of server and module management . An on the fly wireshark tool or even something to replace my fluke micro scanner would be amazing !

This is my first post so please be gentle , I'll do my best to engage any discussions or ideas .

I just joined this forum because I have a burning question/request.

First, some little info about myself: I'm a twentysomething year old science student, currently in Germany. - you may call me WGecko

I have an undying interest in tech and love for nature.

I got myself a Z2-Force this year (because, POLED and epic specs + the modding sounded top-notch). however the availability of these mods are reaaaally frustrating - and it only seems to get worse.

-Let me elaborate a little:
->I hate plugging cables into my phone - that's something I only do to mess with my phone OS, rooting, flashing etc.
-> I'm looking for the simplest way to charge my phone
- I would consider using the TURBO battery mod, constantly plugged in the wall. -BUT there is just no availability of it anywhere ATM, especially in Europe.

- I wanted to get a wireless battery MOD -BUT again - there's just no availability.

- Currently I use the moto mod wireless charging shell. -BUT this added another 50g to my phone that is somewhat unnecessary
So as a solution I fixed a 15W QI charger (and some magnets to hold the phone) onto my wall, using the QI shell on my phone. This somewhat does the trick - effectively fastcharging the phone at 1,5A.

There would be a waaaaay simpler solution though! - How hasn't anyone done a SIMPLE docking mod? You know, something similiar to the INCIPIO CAR DOCK? -but for desktop

So I am proposing that someone with MOTO-MOD developer experience, throw together a desktop docking mod.
A "MOD" (a little cradle sitting on your desktop) that your phone snaps to, connects to the pins and provides - turbocharge capability to the phone. The dock can be connected via USB-C to your 15W USB-wall plug.

If want to expand the dock, you could add on headphone-jack, or more USB-connectors e.g. to connect to a computer. -but first, pleeeeease just let me charge my phone.

IF someone could explain to me, while this SIMPLE thing doesn't yet exist, that would also help. There are already 4 different kind of loudspeakers and lot's of expensive gadgets - but no simple charging solution.

MDK-Compute not working correctly

Hi fellow MotoDevs,

I'm currently working on a "Laptop Mod". For this project I bought a moto mod mdk, because it should give me all i need for this. I additionally bought a Slimport adapter and a usb3 hub which uses the Vialab VL813-Q7 controller chip, so that should work. I build the mdk-compute example firmware which should do all i want. The display output works like a charm, but i can't get the usb3 (which standard is this? 3.0/3.1 or what? the docs aren't clear on this) port to work with this firmware. My dip switches do work and are set correctly, with the usb2 firmware all of my usb devices work. I test both firmwares with a usb3 usb thumb drive.

Im using the middle usb-c port, which is correct According to the docs. I use the compute firmware and confirmed in the menuconfig the mod usb permission. My USB hub works perfectly fine on my phone and with the usb2 example. I dont know whats wrong with the usb3.

Lens Mods

I feel like this must have been asked before but I couldn't find it.

Why are there no simple lens mods for the Zs? Obviously it would be great to have a powered automatic telescoping lens, but we needn't even go that far. Why isn't there a series of $15-$20 lens mods with zoom, fish eye, etc? Or a manual telescoping lens? Or even a $30 thin lens dock mod that comes with a bunch of little lens for all of the above?

They have stupid clamp-on lenses for other cameras, but the Z series could make those look like toys in terms of usability with just a simple shell, some magnets, and some cheap plastic (or glass) lenses. What gives? Isn't this an obvious win for people who want to squeeze a little more from their camera?

LCD Mod - Plug Moto into an external screen

Hi developers and moto team,

I am a happy user of the Beamer mod.

Now I thought it would be cool to plug the moto phone into the backside of a LCD screen, connect a bluetooth keyboard and work like with a desktop computer, writing Whatsapps, etc.

The moto LCD mod would have to provide a screen driver to map the resolution to common LCD monitors.

Do you think this is worth to explore / possible with the SDK?

I2S Audio with custom Personality Card

we try to play System Audio through our Mod (raw I2S) as a first demo.

So we got a MDK and designed our Personality-Card. We flashed our Firmware to the MDK and connected it to a Moto Z2.

We are using a TLV320AIC3104 Codec directly connected to the I2S (DIP A2 = ON).

With every Playback-Use-Case activated (none, music, voice call, ringtone, sonification) the Moto Z2 no longer plays audio through its speakers and we can observe the following outputs during playing a mp3 over a Generic Audio Player App:

Hardware:

The clock signal on I2S_BCLK Line is interrupted (about 3-5ms bursts every 50ms).

This constantly repeats during the audio playing.

Is there a way that u could essentially dupe the fob for your car into mod and since certain key presses could say start the car integrate functionality?

The possibilities could be endless as there are smart phone apps that can already run the windows in vehicle, set temp, run diagnostics.

Just an idea!!!
