Freescale has developed a simple module that allows you to do both by combining an accelerometer with a microcontroller and example code that easily gives you the data your looking for.

Well, we're giving you the chance to get your hands on Freescale’s Accelerometer Cube (MMA9559LKUBE) featuring the MMA9559L intelligent motion sensing platform, a 3-axis accelerometer with an embedded ColdFire MCU, a battery and three color LEDs that blink different colors and rates depending on the cubes motion and orientation. Some of the features demonstrated by the MMA9559L intelligent motion sensing platform include: wake, sleep, motion recognition and orientation detection.
