Excellent performance by new long stroke tactile switches

Omron Electronic Components B.V has announced the B3AL, a new tactile switch suitable for demanding OEM applications such as automotive instrumentation, medical equipment and process control applications. The long stroke B3AL switch is a two terminal device featuring a high operating force and long life durability.

The vertically operated switch is notable for its enhanced resistance to dust penetration and a long operating life of up to 1million operation cycles which ensures long and reliable operation under extreme operating conditions. Available in four versions, with operating forces of 1.96N, 2.45N, 3.00N and 3.50N, the long stroke switch has a pretravel of 1.3mm which is achieved by using a rubber plunger.

Featuring a compact design with dimensions of just 6.9mm x 6.0mm x 5.0mm (l x w x h) the B3AL is rated for switching currents of 1mA at 5VDC to a maximum of 50mA at 16VDC with a resistive load and features an insulation resistance of 100MΩ at 100VDC and a contact resistance of 100mΩ. The B3AL switch supports an ambient operating temperature range of-40° to 90°C and weighs approximately 0.18g.

Supplied on 12mm tape and reel, the tactile switch is designed to prevent flux penetration and is available from Omron Electronic Components and European distribution partners with a minimum order quantity of 1400 pieces.

G7L and G8P relays ideal for renewable energy applications play a principal role in effective energy management, ensuring that systems or sub-systems are fully powered down and use no energy when they are not in use. The power efficiency of a system can be notably influenced by the way in which power is switched and applied. Many emerging renewable energy based systems, however, have characteristics that are not well served by existing switches, such as frequent, long term switching of higher DC currents. At the same time, the relays themselves consume energy during switching, which can be minimised by good design.

Omron has developed two new relays starting from the existing product families G7L and G8P, specifically to meet the needs and requirements of renewable energy systems. Many of these systems will require efficient DC-AC inverter circuits where robust and reliable relays must be capable of handling AC load switching and providing network grid isolation protection.

Relays in the inverter must use minimal coil power during continuous closed contact operation as minimising power loss in the inverter is essential to prevent excessive temperature rise and efficiency losses. Renewable power applications will therefore demand durable power relays capable of switching loads of up to 30A, providing a large >1.5mm contact gap to ensure dependable load isolation, a mechanical endurance in excess of 30,000 switching operations and a low coil hold ‘on’ power.

The new Omron G7L relay features a sealed, PCB mounting package with mechanical dimensions of 52.5mm (l) x 35.5mm (w) x 41.0mm (h). The G7L provides a durable switching relay solution with two 30A load contacts, a contact gap of >3mm for each contact and a low coil hold on voltage of 4.5V. Voltage loads of up to 280V can be supported.

With a power rating of 5000VA the new Omron G8P is a compact, plastic sealed housing relay, suitable for PCB or panel mount applications. The G8P is capable of switching a maximum current load of 20A or a maximum AC voltage of 250V. Featuring a 2.0mm contact gap, the G8P relay is available in an industry standard PCB mounting package with dimensions of 32.1mm (l) x 27.2mm (w) x 20.1mm (h).

Both relays have an operating temperature range of -25° to +85° and have VDE and UL/CSA ratings approval.

Omron is making a significant effort to improve the efficiency of relays where the key characteristics of switching capacity, switching endurance, coil type, load isolation and physical construction can have a notable impact on the overall energy efficiency of a system. New relay families will address the characteristics of new classes of applications that are emerging from the drive for renewable energy use.

NEW PRODUCT RELEASE - OMRON XF3E Rotary Backlock Connector

OMRON release the XF3E, a 1.1 mm-high FPC (flexible printed circuit) connector with a pitch of 0.3 mm and 90 pins - the largest pin count of its kind - on July 30, 2010. FPC connectors are used in a wide range of digital devices, including smartphones, mobile phones, PCs, optical disk drives, and LCD projectors.

Development Background

With the recent increases in the amount of information transmitted within digital devices, demand is increasing for multipole FPC connectors. In particular, the incorporation of an increasing number of functions into touch panel-equipped mobile devices will increase signal lines, and this is expected to result in a growing need for connectors with higher pin counts.

Demand is growing for high pin-count FPC connectors that have low-profile configurations that cater to the trend toward smaller and slimmer devices, and those that feature highly impact-resistant backlock mechanisms that are better able to withstand use in mobile devices. OMRON's new XF3E FPC connector was developed to meet all of these varied needs simultaneously.

Features

The XF3E FPC connector manages to accommodate 90 pins despite its small size, with a pitch of 0.3 mm, a height of 1.1 mm, and a depth of 4.3mm (when the slider is locked).

A lower-profile, smaller footprint design has been achieved while incorporating a backlock mechanism.
The double-sided (upper and lower) contact point structure accepts any FPC insertion direction for increased freedom in device design.
The connector is environmentally friendly as it can be used with halogen-free components.

The EE-SX 1107, EE-SX 1108 and EE-SX 1109 are Transmissive Photomicrosensors with ultra-compact size, allowing usage in applications where available mounting space is at a premium. Available in slot widths of 1mm, 2mm or 3mm. This provides the option to be flexible in designs where highly sensitive analogue outputs are needed and thus achieve the best non-contact sensing solution.

The EE-SX 1131 has the same compact design as the EE-SX 1108 (only 5mm x 4mm x 4mm) however the detector side also contains a two-stage phototransistor. This makes it possible for use in differential position sensing applications, for example within an encoder.

For high frequency tracking applications where a digital output is needed, Omron offers the EE-SX 4134 Transmissive Photomicrosensor type. It features a Photo IC detector and has a wide operating supply voltage range from 2.2VDC - 7VDC.

All of the products fully meet the stringent reflow soldering temperature profiles needed for todays production processes and are available in tape and reel packaging for automated PCB mounting.

The components are lead-free and ROHS compliant.
